Generic USB Smartmedia card reader when I plug in the Smartmedia image card
reader.

I assume you loaded this software from a CD or disk that came with the
device? Did you look to see if there was an updated version of the
software on the manufacturer's website? Perhaps a version more
compatible with your operating system?

If not, what operating system are you using? Thanks.

has the following tips re: a similar problem...

A SanDisk SDDR31 Imagemate USB card-reader works on a notebook
computer running Windows XP, but when connected to a desktop PC
running Windows 98 SE, a blue screen of death appears within 15
seconds of the device being connected to a USB hub, even though the
software was loaded according to the instructions, followed by the
installation of the latest device drivers from SanDisk.

The error message reads: "A fatal exception OE has occurred at
0028:c15b0527 in VXD APIX(01)+00003207."

Possible solutions

Any fatal exception OE that has a segment address of 0028 strongly
suggests an interrupt request (IRQ) conflict, with it being most
likely that the USB device is sharing an IRQ, and the device drivers
are not properly programmed to enable IRQ sharing, which, of course,
both Windows 98 SE and Windows XP support.

If you don't know anything about interrupt requests, and IRQ sharing,
enter the terms within double quotation marks in the Google search
engine.

The first thing to do is in such a case is to check (or check again)
for driver updates. If the latest drivers are loaded they should
support IRQ sharing properly. If the problem still exists, the most
likely cause is that an application has installed a conflicting
version of the Apix.vxd file - the VXD file named in the error
message.

Programs from Adaptec, Roxio Easy CD, and Direct CD are notorious for
installing their own versions of the Apix.vxd file in the
C:\Windows\System\IOSUBSYS folder. If any of these programs are
installed on the system, upgrading them to the latest versions will
allow you to restore the original Windows 98 versions of Apix.vxd and
Wnaspl32.dll into this folder. This is because the latest versions of
these programs don't share the Windows versions of these files - they
place their own versions in their programs' folders.

The original Windows files should still be in the same folder and have
been renamed with a .bak (backup) extension. If so, rename the
existing Apix.vxd and Wnaspl32.dll to Apix.adp and Wnaspl32.adp, and
then change the .bak extension on the backup files to .vxd and .dll
respectively.

If the .bak versions of these files don't exist, then use the right
mouse button to click on the Apix.vxd file, click Properties and check
under the Version tab. If the Company name is listed as Adaptec
instead of Microsoft, the Adaptec version of both of theses files have
to be replaced with the Microsoft versions from the Windows 98 CD.

The easiest way to replace the files in a Windows 98 /98 SE system is
to follow this path Start => Run - and enter sfc (for System File
Checker). Choose the option that allows a single file to be extracted
from the Windows CD, and enter the file's name in the search box. The
source and destination folders do not have to be specified, because
the SFC already knows them. Rebooting the system should solve the
problem.

If there is still a problem, try conducting a Google Groups search by
entering the the name of a newsgroup such as alt.windows98 in the
first search box, followed by the error message (or part thereof)
within double quotation marks in the second search box that comes up.

has more tips...

I've installed drivers for the ImageMate CompactFlash USB (model
SDDR-31) and connected it to my computer, but my system locks up and a
blue screen appears with the message: " A fatal exception OE has
occurred at 0028:C16ED46E in module VXD APIX(01)...The application
will be terminated" (Or it immediately reboots) What's going on?
You probably have Adaptec®, Easy CD Creator™ version 3.5, 4.0 or 4.1
installed on your system. This software probably came with your
Iomega®, HP®, or other branded CD RW drive. The Easy CD Creator
program uses certain APIX.vxd functions that are also incorporated
into Windows 98. This alone is not a problem. However, when CD Creator
is installed, it renames Microsoft's APIX files. When these files are
renamed, compatibility issues arise between CD Creator and other
peripherals (such as ImageMate) that use the APIX functions. To
rectify the problem, please follow the instructions below.

Easy CD creator 3.5 and earlier or Direct CD 2.5d:

    * Upgrade to 3.5c Apply the floppy107.exe patch from ROXIO
    * You will find the update to 3.5c and the floppy107.exe towards
the bottom of the page. Once you have upgraded and run the patch,
please restart the machine and then plug in the ImageMate. You should
now be on-line

For Easy CD creator 4.0 and 4.01:

    * Upgrade to 4.02 Then run this ren_apix.bat program
    * This file will replace the Adaptec/ROXIO version of the APIX.vxd
, wnaspi32.dll and wnaspi32.adp with the Windows versions. If you are
still experiencing issues, right click on the file APIX.vxd on your
system and make sure it says Microsoft on the version tab. If it does
not you can extract the correct Microsoft version of each from the
Win98 cd in the win98_53.cab

For Easy CD creator 4.03 and higher:

    * You just need to apply this ren_apix.bat program.

If you have applied the patch and have the correct version of the
file, you may need to reload the driver.

    * Right click on "my computer" go to properties and then divice
manager. At the bottom under Universal serial bus controllers, you
will see an entry for the ImageMate with a yellow excalmation next to
it. Highlight the ImageMate entry and choose remove. Then choose
refresh. It should now be properly loaded

When you start Microsoft Windows 98, you may receive error messages
similar to the following ones:

Rename.
   5. Type apix.old, and then press ENTER.
   6. Close the Find: Files Named Apix.vxd window.
   7. Restart the computer.
   8. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into your CD or DVD-ROM drive.
Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent
the Windows 98 CD-ROM from starting automatically.
   9. On the Start menu, and then click Run.
  10. In the Open box, type sfc.exe, and then click OK.
  11. Click Extract one file from installation disk.
  12. In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box,
type Apix.vxd, and then click Start.
  13. In the Restore From box, type the following line, and then click
OK (where X is the drive letter of your CD or DVD-ROM drive):
      X:\Win98

  14. In the Save File In box, type the following line, and then click
OK (where C is the drive letter of the hard disk on which you
installed Windows 98):
      C:\windows\system\iosubsys

I used to use a smartcard reader and I remember it gavce a choice of 2
options at the start which were somehow connected to how the pc
interacted with printers - I cant for the life of me remember the
details, but I found that if I chose the other than that which had
seemed the obvious I could install the thing
