hacking != cracking. Hacking is a word to describe a programmer who puts together a program that does soemthing useful in a novel way (i.e. a small program that is able to report on file content in an informative way). Cracking on the other hand is the process of attacking, illegally altering or manipulating other people's intellectual property. I actually don't believe that someone who wants a copy of a port scanner necessarily requires it for malicious cracking on foreign networks. Although, it is possible to do such, I can tell you from my experience as a whitehatter that I use the same tools to perform penetration testing as the crackers do: that is, there are legitimate uses for all tools. Just my two cents... |
