shenmueman,

If it is still available, could you please post a link to the eBay
auction you are referring to?

shenmueman,

What are your conditions for an answer you will accept? For example, I
have found an auction on the Yahoo! Japan site for this item, but the
seller will not ship overseas, so you would need somebody in Japan to
act as a go-between for you. Would you require an arrangement where
the item would be shipped directly to you?

I might as well post the link I have, since it has pictures of the
item so we can verify if this is what you are looking for:
http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e18176588

All text is Japanese, except for the English that mentions that the
seller will not ship internationally. I can ask if they would be
willing to reconsider for your case though.

Clarification of Question by shenmueman-ga on 10 Nov 2002 06:46 PST
It would be nice if the person could ship internationally.

shenmueman,

Unfortunately, the auctions offering the UtaMaga Special item all
require payment by special Japanese bank transfer, something which
cannot be done from the United States.

There is another option though. The online anime service Celga
specializes in acting as a go-between for foreigners wishing to
participate in Yahoo Japan auctions. You let them know the auctions
you are interested in and place your bid through them, specifying a
maximum price in Japanese yen you are willing to pay, and they will
act as the bidder for you. If you have the highest bid, they then
receive the item and ship it to you. They charge a minimum $5 markup
fee and a slight premium on the dollar/yen exchange rate.

For more information, see the Celga site:
http://www.celga.com

This is the auction for just the Uta Maga Special, and will probably
be the least expensive of the two:
http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e18176588

This auction is for the Uta Maga Special and the pocket calendar that
came with it:
http://page3.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c24589433

Would this serve as an acceptable answer for you?

Request for Question Clarification by hailstorm-ga on 10 Nov 2002 21:18 PST
Slight correction: they *both* include the pocket calendar. So both
auctions are offering the identical items...but the first one has a
starting bid of 1000 yen, while the later starts at 3700 yen.

It sounds really nice! But I do not know when either of them ends...
I'm willing to do that buisness, but I want to know when it ends and
I'll bid for it (at the last minute or the latest that I can, of
course). So I just need the time info. Thanks!

shenmueman,

There are about three days left on the first auction, four days on the
second. But if you read the Celga site description, they place the
bids for you, and they automatically do it at the "last minute" to try
to get you the cheapest price. In fact, do NOT send your bid request
to them at the last minute, because they are not staffed 24 hours a
day, and may not be able to get your bid in for you in time. From
their site:

"...we usually wait until the last minute to bid. This often results
in lower prices for you, the buyer. But it does mean that your bid
will not show up until the last day of the auction... so if you don't
see it, but you have received a confirmation email from us, don't
panic! We're just waiting for the best possible time." Please see
http://www.celga.com/shipping.html for more details on this.

Please note that you must have a Paypal online payment account, and
you must send Celga a deposit for at least half of the maximum amount
of your bid before the auction ends. If you do not win the auction,
you are eligible for a full refund of your deposit. Unfortunately, if
you do not have a Paypal account already, you may not be able to get
it set up and funded in time to make your payment. Celga does accept
United States Money Order, but again you they may not receive it in
time for you to bid on your auctions.

Good luck!

Yes, that was a good and very helpful answer! I will start biding
soon! Once again, thank you SO much!

Geez, we already went through these questions. Gosh, oh well... Blah
blah blah. Thank you! I want to bid on both, but maybe I shouldn't, or
should I? Hmm, I probably will, lol!

Can you now post this as an answer?

Sorry, I meant THAT. Well, you know what I mean!

So you're the entertainment/music researcher I take it.

shenmueman,

The item you have mentioned is quite a rare item indeed, even in
Japan. It was never available to the general public; the only way to
get it when it came out was to buy the Hikaru Utada CD Deep River,
send in the entry form that came with it, and hope to be one of the
500 people chosen in a random lottery to receive it. The Utamaga
Special contains all of the material from the Utamaga 1-6 series, plus
special bonus material available nowhere else. I can see why a true
Hikki fan would want this!

It's unfortunate that you were outbid in the eBay auction for this
item. But, there are still 499 others available, and a couple of them
happen to be on sale on the Yahoo Japan auction site, the largest
auction site in Japan.

The first auction ends in around five and a half days, and starts at a
minimum bid of 1000 yen:

http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e18176588

The second auction ends in around three and a half days, and starts at
a minimum bid of 3700 yen:

http://page3.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c24589433

The second auction also has a "Buy Now" price of 5500 yen, for which
the person will sell the item outright.

Unfortunately, getting these items will not be easy. Both sellers have
specified that the items will only be sold domestically, meaning that
you cannot bid on them directly (and even if you could, the
conversations with the bidder would have to be in Japanese) What you
will have to do is use a service that acts as a go-between, bidding on
the auction for you, receiving the merchandise if you win, and
shipping it to you once received.

A good, reputable site that provides this service is Celga. The
online anime service Celga specializes in acting as a go-between for
foreigners wishing to participate in Yahoo Japan auctions. You let
them know the auctions you are interested in and place your bid
through them, specifying a maximum price in Japanese yen you are

Thank you very much for the tip and the kind words. As a final

Have you considered contacting the winning bidder and offering a
higher price for the magazine? Just a thought.

Just some more information on this item...it appears to be a quite
rare item that was never available for sale to the general public. You
had to buy a Hikaru Utada CD and send in the card included with it to
be entered in a drawing, from which 500 people were randomly selected
to receive this prize.

Utamaga Special contains mostly the material from Utamaga 1-6, as well
as some special bonus material. With only 500 official copies out
there it may be tough to find more for sale...but it seems her
popularity has taken a slight hit since she announced her recent
marriage, so maybe more of these will become available if you are
willing to Wait & See. <groan>

shenmueman,

I'm not so much an Entertainment/Music researcher, just someone who
has a little knowledge of the Japanese language and things Japanese. I
had several years experience as a Japanese anime fan as well, so I
know how to scour Japanese sites for things of interest.
