I am lookiing for a specific song from the Mostly, Martha soundtrack.
It was a "novelty" type song, sung (I think) in French and used as
background during two scenes without dialogue. Had a "shwep, schwep"
kind of lyric?

arizonabuddy --

I think I have found what you are looking for. The music you describe
seems to be "Via Con Me," sung by Paolo Conte. The song appears on an
RCA CD entitled "The Best of Paolo Conte" and is widely available from
online retailers.

A sample of the recording can be found here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/music/B000006R56/glance/104-6907555-2868725

A listing of all of the music used in "Mostly Martha" (a
German-produced film originally titled "Bella Martha") can be found at
the following site, with information on the recordings that include
the selections:
http://www.bellamartha.de/

Click on the "Musik" link at the above page to access the list of
songs in a separate window. The information given includes each song's
name, the recording artist, CD and label. If I have chosen the wrong
selection as the response to your question, samples of all or most of
the others listed should be available at online music sites. Please
ask for a clarification of my answer should that be necessary.
However, only a few of them are vocal selections, and most of those
are by American artists. These facts, plus your colorful description
of the "schwep, schwep" nature of the French lyrics, makes me pretty
sure I have the right one.

The "Musik" list referred to above identifies the Paolo Conte song's
use in the film as "Theme Song IV" and its context in the film as
"Martha muss ihren Herd mit Mario Teilen." Unfortunately, two of the
typically useless online translators translate this as "Martha must
divide their stove with Mario." (Maybe it is "share" instead of
"divide.")

Search Strategy:

Internet Movie Data Base website ( http://imdb.com/ ) search for
"Mostly Martha" yielded information on "Bella Martha" and contained a
message board reference to the availability of a music list on the
Bella Martha website.

Successful Google search term:
"via con me" conte sample OR samples

I hope this is what you are looking for. Please ask for clarification
if you need help searching out samples of other music from the film or
if you any of the information above needs further explanation.

This is just what I was looking for. Thank you for helping a music
lover discover an intriguing new artist.
