Rose Greenfield. I need a death certificate. She died between 1915
and 1920. She was born August or 1898. The City census for 1915,
shows that she was a High School student and was 16 years old. By
1910 census, she was not list and my Mother in law her sister told me
that she died before my mother in Law married in November 1920. Her
Mother was Katie or Clara Greenfield and her sister was Julia
Greenfield. They lived on Ave C in Manhattan. Her father was Bernard
Greenfield but he died in 1899 in Denver Colo. By 1900 Katie was back
in NYC with her two girls.
I have sent for the Death Certfiicate in NYC, a few times, but they
have never sent me the correct Death Certificate. I have had it
researched a few times but never any success. Can you help??

correction: By 1920 Census Rose Greenfield was not listed

1900 Census shows that Katie is living in NYC with her two daughters.
1910 Census shows that Katie is living on Ave C and that her two
girls, Julia and Rose are with her.
1915 census says that Katie is lving with her two girls on Ave C and
that Katie is in High School.
1920 Census shows that only Julia is living with her.

Dear bsmart,

This might sound a bit melodramatic, but: Is it absolutely sure she
really died in a physical sense between 1915 and 1920? Couldn't it
also be possible that she "died" in the eyes of the family because she
behaved in an inadequate way of any kind? I know that this sounds
rather like a movie plot (daughter marries a man the family don't
like; daughter is "dead" for the family) - but such things
nevertheless really happened. Is there a chance that something like
this occurred?

Regards,
Scriptor

Anything could be possible but I really think that Rose died ,
probably in the influenza epidemic and maybe the name was misspelled
on the death certifica. Could it have been Grinfield, Greenfeld etc.
It seems that the life stopped after 1915. I have written to anumber
of the High Schools in NYC at that time and they tell me they have no
records that go back that far to her birthdate. I've had no success
with writing to at least a ddozen cemeteries around the area. Because
the parents were both Hungarian I have written to the Hungarian
cemetery and they have no record.

Bsmart --

It appears that working with NY City Archives to try for a death
certificate hasn't been productive:
http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doris/html/5bymail.html

My next steps would be to take the address from the 1915 city census
and see if there's a chance of finding either of the following:
1. school
2. synagogue

Then it would be a matter of contacting city or synagogue to see what
records might exist. Often they're present in paper form (a friend is
putting baptism records for 70 years of St. Stanislaus in Buffalo
on-line), awaiting discovery. These are difficult searches because
the overwhelming percentage of these records are filed away in paper
archives.

Best regards,

Do you have any additional information that might assist?

1) Does Rose have a middle name or initial? There are a few other
people during this time period with the same name, so any identifying
middle name or initial could help weed out the incorrect
possibilities.

2) Is it possible that she could have gotten married and could this
be an explanation for why she can't be located under the GREENFIELD
surname, if her last name was changed due to marriage?

3) Did the mother, CLARA and/or KATIE ever remarry? Do you know
where and when the mother died?

4) Was Julia ever known to marry and do you know where and when she
died?

SINCERELY,

Do you live in the New York City area where you could do some research
on the records yourself or not?

NO additional information.
1. No Middle name that I know of.
2. Everyhting that I have heard from family, says she died. No date
but the records show that she was gone anytime from 1915 to 1920.
3. Kate never remarried Yes I know where Kate was buried and when
she died. No Rose is not buried at that cemetery. There is no Rose
listed in the cemetery records.
4. Julia was my Mother in Law, married to Will Woolf Swart. and she is
buried in Calif with her husband.
5. I don't live in NYC but I have had Professional Genealogists look
for the records and no one has found it todate. I also was at the
Mormon Church last week and I looked at other spellings and pulled 4
with the name of Rose Greenfield. I have asked for two of the records
to be sent in from Salt Lake City. If that produces nothing them I
will ask for the other two records to be brought in.

Thinking of going back to the Library and check the first letteer of
the name, instead of G, could it have been an S or somelthing
similiar?

Sincerely,

bsmart-GA
