Hi there muppet, and thanks for clarifying.

I believe the best resource for what you seek is a website called Up
My Street, which allows you to view quite a bit of data about any
given postcode.

Although deprivation is not given as a discreet quantity, the data
which is given should allow you to develop your own fairly
sophisticated metric to measure this.

The pertinent data are:

* Acorn Score - this is a system which attempts to divide the UK into
various segments. It divides by such things as stocks and shares
ownership, car ownership, and so on.

* Property prices - including average price for the neighbourhood, and
for the nation.

* Council tax band

* Average school results, as compared to the national average.

* Crime rate, again as compared to the national average.

These, and other data, are freely available at:

http://www.upmystreet.com

Another site which holds considerably useful resources is the
Government's own Neighbourhood Statistics page. It is rather less user
friendly, I'm afraid, but still holds good data which may help you.

http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk

I hope this answers your question. If anything is unclear, or needs
further explanation, then please don't hesitate to request
clarification before rating this question.

Good luck with your masters!

Hi muppet,

Since you used the term 'postcode' rather than 'postal code'
(Canadian) or 'zip code' (American), I'm thinking you might be in the
UK? I've found a post code search engine for Scotland which is
supposed to identify if a specific area qualifies as deprived and is
eligible for a Stamp Tax exemption. Is that the type of thing you
need?

The jarman index rates different areas in the UK against deprivation,
calculated from a number of different parameters. Each area has its
own jarman index, from which primary care payments to GP practices are
based.

Ok, I am doing my masters degree and I am looking at the types of
patients who fail to attend thier apointments. Research shows it is
usually those who suffer higher levels of deprivation. I am
researching this through monitoring those who do not attend their
appointment within the hospital where I work, in london, england. I
understand there is a website where I can type in a postcode and it
will give me the level of deprivation, but I cant find it

Thanks
