Hi scout2,
I'll offer this as a comment since the information I have for you is
only anecdotal. I saw Ms. Keaton on Oprah when the movie "Hanging Up"
premiered. Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow also appeared on the program.
Ms. Keaton wore a bright orange suit with matching gloves. I remember
Oprah asking her about the glove issue and she had no reason for
wearing gloves other than she loved them. No nail-biting habit. No
mysterious skin disease. I think she even took her gloves off for the
curious.
There's a portion of the interview here:

On fashion...
Diane wore what she was going to wear for the millennium party in
Washington D.C. but wasn't able to go so she's wearing it on today's
show!
"I love gloves, I really love gloves...for special occasions!"

Gloves seem to be just another quirky fashion statement of Ms.
Keaton's. Her "Annie Hall look" was heavily copied in the 1970s, but
this particular affectation hasn't caught on. For me, it would be
just one more item to lose --like my glasses! Maybe others feel the
same way.

On Keaton's fashion sense:
From Lifetime's Intimate Portrait: Diane Keaton by Richard Bach -

"But it was her role in Annie Hall that first commanded the attention
of America. The film was directed by comic genius, Woody Allen, and
was loosely based on his relationship with Diane Keaton. Her sense of
style was so unique that it started a fashion trend all across the
country. Her friend Meryl Streep says it best, "Her own personal style
is so unique and successful...she can act, direct and design," Streep
laughs and says, Diane is a "triple threat."

"Annie Hall (1977) Some women still copy Diane Keaton's three-piece
pinstripe Ralph Lauren suits worn with white shirt and tie. It's the
look that launched Lauren women's wear."

From glove lovers world message board:

"Diane Keaton and Walter Matthau were on Larry King's show last night
(2/10). Keaton was wearing this very nice suit and black satin gloves
that dissappeared up her sleeves. Quite a good catch for channel
surfing!"

"But that is at odds with the real Keaton, whose only resemblance to
the flaky Annie is a propensity for eccentric wardrobe choices. (She
is, for example, wearing black leather gloves to press interviews on
this warm L.A. day.) Keaton, whose real name is Diane Hall, describes
herself with words such as "ambitious" and "driven."
-----------------
Perhaps Ms. Keaton ascribes to philosophy of the glove fetish folk:

here}
"Take a look at your hand. It is like a fingerprint ... each one
unique. You can tell a lot about a person by looking at their hands if
you try. Now, knowing this, think of the innate mystery presented to
you in the gloved hand ... What do you see? What can't you see?
Think of how diverse yet sensual a hand can be ... all at once it will
show you power, compassion, grief, humor, mystery, lust ... the
choices are endless! Add to the hand a glove and what you do is
magnify what was already there?"
Sorry I couldn't find anything more definitive for you. Diane is a
favorite of mine and quite a few years ago, I saw her leaving her
apartment on Central Park West in Manhattan. And, yes, she indeed was
wearing gloves. If this suffices for an answer, I'll gladly post it.
If not, ....
