This one has me stumped. I have Windows XP Professional, with all the
necessary updates (ie: service pack 1, security updates, etc.) About
a month ago, out of no where (I think) Windows Media Player started
playing videos all messed up. The video files would be all zoomed in
and the quality would be very poor. It's not as simple as choosing -
Zoom In/Out. I thought it was the player (Windows Media Player 9
beta) so I tried a different player. The same thing happened. I
cannot play any media files correctly on my computer. This includes
DVD's, mpegs, divx, any video file. I went to microsoft's website and
asked in one of those hard to find support forums but I didn't get a
response.

The solution to the problem:
Option #1:
If I open one media player, open any video file, play then pause it.
Then open up another media player (which can be different from the
former) and play the video I want to play it will play correctly and
the quality will be back to normal. It's getting annoying doing this
everytime I play a video and I don't want to do option #2.

Option #2: Reformat

What I've already tried to do (after each case I tried to see if it
fixed it):

Use various media players:
mplayer2.exe (default)
PowerDVD (also messes up playing regular dvd's)
Windows Media Player 9
etc.

Install an older media player over the new one
Reinstall latest
Reinstall video drivers
Upgrade video drivers
Downgrade video drivers

Update video codecs
Reinstall video codecs
Reinstall divx

Uninstall sp1 (service pack 1)
Reinstall sp1

I may have forgot to mention other things I've tried.

thanks

Have you at any point installed Nimo Codec Pack (any build, but
particularly build 8)?

Does the problem also occur with:

ZoomPlayer: http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml

BSPlayer: http://www.bsplay.com/downloads.php?cat=bsplay

Any other details you can think of are always useful to any researcher
who takes this on.

Thanks,

I installed the Nimo Codec Pack (I believe version 5.0) as an attempt
to fix this problem. It did not work. I still have them installed.

I tried the Zoom Player (ironic name) and BSPlayer neither of which
worked (same zoomed in and low quality picture).

Should I remove nimo codec pack version 5? install version 8?

Nimo Codec Pack is a fix it or break it type of program. I've had no
success with version 8, but you might.

I think the offending program is far more likely to be Media Player 9
beta. You may have noticed that Microsoft no longer offer it on
Windows Update, which suggests there are still some serious
difficulties to be ironed out. If you can, uninstall that.

Does this occur over a wide range of videos? There's no chance that
it's just a few files which have become corrupt, is there?

OK, this is really weird and funny at the same time. I opened up two
media players and placed them side by side on my desktop.

I opened the same file on both media players but I loaded the one on
the left first (so naturally it was zoomed in). Now I wanted to take
a screenshot of the two players side by side but usually what happens
when you take a screenshot of a video it appears black when pasted
into an image editor.

I forgot, but this did not happen.

It appeared to show up perfectly in MS Paint.

*** The following is a little hard to explain. If you're lost just
ignore it. When I refer to left player and right player I mean within
the pasted image in paint.

But, when I scroll the image vertically, the image in the left player
(ZOOMED IN) did not scroll with the image. It remained static within
the image and the left media player's display was like a mask
(photoshop term). If I close both media players the left player's
(ZOOMED IN) image was removed. Note: the right player's was pasted
correctly into paint and was unchanged throughout this whole thing.

If this really confused everyone just ignore it, but it seems to be
related to the problem I'm having. The bottom line: I should not be
able to make a print screen of any video using the default print
screen button. But it seemed to work partially on my system.

I've had all sorts of problems like this that occured for no apparent
reason. If I remember correctly (it was quite a while ago), all my
problems went away when I uninstalled the Realplayer. A strange
occurance, since I wasn't playing the videos in the real player, only
in windows media. So my advice to you is to uninstall any video player
you are not currently using (or realplayer, even if you are using it),
and see if that helps.

thanks for the response. I removed Real player, quicktime, and
powerdvd and gave it a reboot but it didn't work. The only player I
have left is Windows Media Player beta 9. Thanks anyway.

seizer, thanks for the help, I think my only solution is to reformat.
The only way to uninstall windows media player 9 beta *is* to reformat
windows (well, you can hack around in the registry and hope windows
likes it). It was working perfectly fine for so long though. It
didn't appear to be windows media player unless another program caused
a conflict with it.

thanks everyone
