Hello. I take prescription Nexium for GERD and dudenitis. Sometimes I accidentally eat food before I go to bed at night, a no no from the doctor. Eating at that time causes my heart burn to flare up rather badly. I would like to be able to take some store bought antacids, to get relief and be able to go back to bed. I have used Maalox but it isn't quite strong enough, it wares off after 10 minutes, thus heartburn wake me back up. What are the stronger antacids you can buy at a store, say Walgreen's? Are there any specific kinds I should get? I know I know, I ought to not eat then, but sometimes you don't have any other options! Please give me any good suggestions, home remedies would be nice also. |

Hi saradee-ga Gavison Extra Strength Antacid is a popular choice, receiving a four and a half star rating (out of five) from consumers: http://www.drugstore.com/qxp10458_333181_SESpider/Gaviscon_Extra_Strength/Extra_Strength_Antacid_Cool_Mint_Flavor_Liquid.htm Alternagel provides 'a greater concentration of antacid per teaspoon', so might be worth trying. Again, consumers have given a four and a half star rating: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=10445&catid=10473&trx=GFI-0-PPCS&trxp1=10473&trxp2=10445 Rolaids also provide an extra strength antacid: http://www.rolaidspromotions.com/ There is a link for a free sample. However, this is unavailable at this time, due to 'a limited supply'. Mylanta provide a range of antacid products, the strongest of which is Mylanta Ultra Tabs: http://www.mylanta.com/products/detail.jhtml;jsessionid=EQ5OJOU5JQLJUCQPCB3SUYYKB2IHWNSC?id=mylanta/products/adults/ultratabs.inc Another possibility is Alka Seltzer Extra Strength: http://www.alka-seltzer.com/as/as_extra_strength.htm Natural Remedies Raising the bed of the head can ease the problem (see 'Medical Treatment' section): http://www.healthandage.com/Home/gm=20!gsq=heartburn!gid2=1723 Changes in eating habits might be beneficial for your problem. Licorice root, vitamin C, bitter foods such as dandelion, and plant oils such as peppermnt oil can all relieve heartburn naturally: http://www.bodyandfitness.com/Information/Health/indigestion.htm For a couple of great alternative natural remedies, check this article out: http://njnj.essortment.com/heartburn_rwqw.htm Yoghurt or milk, a favourite of my own Grandmother, might also help: http://pregnancy.about.com/library/rem/blremheartburn.htm Hope this info helps and you enjoy uninterrupted refreshing sleep! Gelusil is a very good antacid. Works well for me. Go in for liquid antacid rather than chewable tablets |
