From what city/state/region are you seeking a consultant?

Thank you nellie_bly-ga for your speedy enquiry.

It doesn't really matter about the location as I hope to work over the
web. But since you asked... my preference would be for a northern
latitude consultant as there is a requirement for heating the space.

brudenell...

My initial search, for "interior design consultants" produced
a reference to a page sponsored by the ASID, or American Society
of Interior Designers. According to the South Central Chapter's
homepage:
"Currently, there are 48 ASID chapters spanning North America."
"The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the oldest
and largest professional organization for interior designers.
ASID was established in 1975, resulting from a merger of two
interior design associations formed in 1931. With more than
30,500 members, ASID establishes a common identity for
professionals and businesses in the field of interior design.
Our members include 20,000 interior design practitioners,
7,000 students and 3,500 manufacturers and representatives
of interior design products and services. Of those designers,
4,000 practice residential design; 6,400 practice contract
design; and 9,600 practice a combination of both residential
and contract design. Most ASID design consultants specify
the products and services used in their design work, and more
than 70 percent of ASID professional designers own or manage
 their own design firms."
http://members.tripod.com/asid_lad/index.htm

So I searched for ASID, and found the organization's home:
http://www.asid.org/

On that page is a link titled "DesignerFinder goes online"
which takes you here:
http://www.asid.org/homepageguest.asp?article=4

This page notes:
"ASID and Traditional Home Team Up to Offer Consumers
Web-based Interior Design Referral Service The American
Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and Traditional
Home magazine have teamed up to launch a free, Web-based
interior design referral service for consumers,
"DesignerFinder." Consumers can access the Web site at
 www.interiors.org/designerservice or via the Traditional
Home Web site at www.traditionalhome.com "

I chose the first link, which states the following:
"Traditional Home Magazine and the American Society of
Interior Designers have teamed to bring you DesignerFinder,
a convenient, comprehensive web based designer referral
service. ASID is the oldest and largest professional
organization for interior designers with more than
 20,000 designers worldwide."

"Click "Find a Designer Now," complete a short survey
and be matched instantly with ASID interior designers
who have the training and expertise to manage all of
the details for your next design project."

"ASID interior design consultants are trained to deal
with more than the furnishings and finishes that go
into making a space look wonderful. They use analytical
problem-solving skills that focus on your needs and
aspirations. Designers listen, understand and ultimately
create a space that exceeds your expectations."

"Designers act as consultants to ensure you get what
you want and need. They'll help you examine your
options, create a roadmap, manage the process or
anything in between - purchasing, ordering, supervising
contractors and overseeing budgets. Interior design
consultants are trained to see the big picture and to
help you balance your aspirations, functional needs
 and budget."

"TO BEGIN YOUR SEARCH FOR A DESIGNER NOW, CLICK HERE!"
http://www.interiors.org/designerservice/page1.cfm

Clicking this link begins the referral process, starting
with a request for your name, address, contact information
and asking if the project will be at the address you list.

This seems to constitute an ideal method to obtain specific
referrals to qualified design consultants tailored to your
specific needs and interests, such as your desire to work
over the internet.

If, however, you would prefer to work from a list of
candidates, the following possibilities are available:

A search for "asid chapters" led to this link for the
Resources.com Professional Directory:
http://www.sfo.com/~coredata/profedir.htm

Clicking on the link for "Interior Designers" takes you
to this part of the page:
http://www.sfo.com/~coredata/profedir.htm#int

Which lists a link for INTERIOR DESIGN'S TOP 100 GIANTS (1998)
http://www.resources.com/top100/index.htm

This list is Interior Design Magazine's top 100 designers
for 1998, and consists of firms with between 7 and 576
interior design employees, with (sometimes, multiple)
offices all over the country.

There are many other links on the Resources.com page,
such as this one, for the International Interior Design
Association's 1996 Competition winners:
http://www.resources.com/winners/index.htm

The winners listed are:
Pascal Arquitector, Core, Gensler and Associates,
VOA Associates, Studios, The Environments Group,
Ruth Livingston, Seccombe Design Associates and
Starr Design Associates. All but Starr Design
Associates have links to their websites.

Since you are interested in Northern latitudes,
you might be interested in the designers on this
page from Resources.com which lists Northern
California design consutants:
http://www.resources.com/designers/ncalifor.htm

Among the listings are:

Johnny Grey, Inc.
101 Henry Adams Street #424
San Francisco, CA 94103
Ph: 415-701-7701 Fax: 415-701-7702
E-Mail: info@johnnygrey.com
'The Worlds Best Kitchen Designer'
 ..Metropolitan Home Magazine

A search on Google Directory for "interior design"
produces 2,940 links, one of which is to the IDD,
or Interior Design Directory, which has a homepage
with links to lists of designers by state:
http://www.i-d-d.com/

Clicking on the link for New York (being a state
in the Northern latitudes) produces a page with
over 100 listings for designers in that location:
http://www.i-d-d.com/designers/states/ny.htm

And, there is also a link for IDD's own
"Designer Finder" service:
http://www.i-d-d.com/designers/designerfinder.htm

This page notes that it is not a free service:
"The cost is $149 for residences and $249 for commercial
spaces. Why charge you? Because finding a designer for
your design project is not a passive task. We contact
designers and obtain their portfolio photos, profile,
 education information, professional affiliations,
 credentials, references, licensing and insurance.
They are also required to fill out a form much like the
form you'll fill out. We provide you with a minimum of
three qualified designers in your area that closely
match your list of criteria. This takes time and money
to do and therefore isn't a free service. Is it worth
it to you to get exactly who you want? We think so.
We think that this is a tremendous value. Designers
don't pay up front for this service. They do pay us
a percentage of the job only if they're hired. This
way you aren't going to get a choice from a select
few designers. Other finder services are free to
clients. We don't believe that is the way to get the
best designer for your job. They don't have thousands
of designers to choose from. We do. We call designers
and tell them that we have a client that is looking
to hire an interior designer based on your specifications.
They go online and fill out a 'designer profile', and send
in their pictures. Could you do this? Sure. Would you want
to? Probably not. You receive a report from us for each
designer that we match to your project. The minimum is
three. You will know where they attended school--their
body of work--that they are licensed and insured-- what
their professional affiliations are--how long they've
been in business and their design pictures. Will every
designer get referrals that we contact initially? No.
Will you get someone who isn't capable? No. Only the
designers that are able to meet our strict criteria are
 sent to you."

I believe I have provided you with a number of workable
options for proceeding with the selection of a design
consultant who will satisfy your needs.

Please do not rate this answer until you are satisfied that the
answer cannot be improved upon by means of a dialog with
the researcher through the "Request for Clarification" process.

Good afternoon to you, brudenell...

As you have posted this in the 'clarifications' section, I am
required to respond in order to clear your request, but it's
good that you did so, as otherwise I would not have received
an email alerting me to the post.

You were easily worth mention as a favorite customer. You are
a premium GA customer, having asked 62 questions, most of
which are very interesting research topics:
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=search&q=brudenell-ga&qtype=all&num=100&sort=qestartts:D:R:d1

You have a very good grasp of the dynamics of the GA system, and
use it well in the process of clarifying your questions and the
answers. You are generous both with excellent ratings and with
tips, for answers you deem worthy of such.

Who could be less than appreciative of your considerable
contributions to the GA legacy?

Warm regards...
