Hello.
A 1998 survey indicated that 72.5 percent of Americans who oppose
abortion support capital punishment.
From the article "Pro-Life Anti-Death Penalty?" by James Kelly and
Christopher Kudlac:
"In 1998, while 76 percent of those accepting any reason a woman might
give for an abortion also favored the death penalty, 72.5 percent of
those who opposed some abortions also supported the death penalty."
On the web site of Americapress.org:

The article cites the General Social Survey, compiled by the
University of Michigan:

The data in the General Social Survey is somewhat complicated to
extract. Fortunately, the University of California at Berkeley has a
program that allows you to make a chart of two variables from the
survey. I did this and was able to verify that the article above
accurately describes the data from the survey.
The 1998 General Social Survey indicates that among those who
supported abortion for any reason, 76.2% favored capital punishment,
while 23.8% opposed capital punishment. Among those who opposed
abortion under some or all circumstances, 72.5% favored capital
punishment while 27.5% opposed capital punishment.
If you wish to see this data, follow these instructions:
(1) Go to UC Berkeley's "Survey Documentation and Analysis" page:

(2) Select "Frequencies or crosstabulation" from the list and press
"start" and wait for the next page ("SDA Tables Program") to appear.
(3) In the box labeled "Row," type: CAPPUN
(4) In the box labeled "Column," type: ABANY
(5) In the box labeled "Selection Filters," type: year(1998)
(6) Press the "Run the Table" button.
search terms: "oppose capital punishment," "favor capital punishment,"
"oppose abortion," "general social survey," "two variables"
I hope this helps. |
