mango1952,

A True Experiment contains:

1) An Independent Variable (IV) which the experimenter manipulates in
order to gauge the effects of that manipulation;

2) One or more Dependent Variables (DV) which are observed during the
experiment and which have values recorded by the experimenter;

3) A Control group which is created by randomly assigning to it
members of the test population.

It is important to change the values on only one Independent Variable
at a time, so that changes in the Dependent Variables can more validly
be attributed to their real cause.

An example of a True Experiment appears in Joyce Schmeeckle's
"Research Designs & Causal Research Hypotheses" for the University of
Nebraska's Psychology 350 Course (July 17, 2001). Here the Researcher
randomly injected students with 5ml of caffeine or water, then left
each subject in an isolation chamber for 20 minutes, at which time the
subjects were given a test of simple mathematics to complete. The
purpose of the experiment was to gauge whether students' performance
on the math tests was improved, degraded, or not affected by the
action of caffeine on the students' brains.

"Psychology 202Q PowerPoint Presentation #6", created by Steven Rumery
in 1998 and updated by Poom Nukulkij in Fall 2000 (located on the
University of Connecticut's website) contains an excellent explanation
and discussion on True Experiments and Between- vs. Within-Subjects
Designs if you wish to explore the types of true experiments in more
detail.
