I'm interested in some data on as many labor unions as possible:
- Membership numbers
- Expected growth in 2003 by union
- Expected growth in 2003 by geographic region
There will be nice tip for information on:
- Recruitment channels
- Links to marketing pieces or other recruitment tools
- Lists of contacts for both internationals and locals in Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin

Here are some examples of the data I can supply.
General statistics about unions in the U.S. and sources for more.

membership numbers for the largest unions in the broad numbers given
in the AFL-CIO example

Names and addresses for the international and national unions in each
of the states you requested as show for Illinois

A link to a site where you can get the names and addresses for all the
locals in those states, which number in the hundreds.

Some recruitment information.

Would this constitute an "answer" for you?

In 2001, 13.5 percent of wage and salary workers were union members,
unchanged from 2000, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor
Statistics reported today. The union membership rate has fallen from
a
high of 20.1 percent in 1983, the first year for which comparable
union
data are available. Some highlights from the 2001 data are:

--In both 2001 and 2000, about 16.3 million wage and salary workers
     were union members.

--Nearly 4 in 10 government workers were union members in 2001,
compared
with less than 1 in 10 private wage and salary workers.

--Protective service workers, a group that includes police officers
and
firefighters, had the highest unionization rate among all
occupations,
     at 38 percent.

Half of the 16.3 million union members in the U.S. lived in six
states--

AFL-CIO
http://www.aflcio.org/uniondifference/uniondiff11.htm
"Union membership grew quickly in the 1930s, from 3.4 million members
in 1930 (12 percent of non farm payrolls) to more than 10 million in
1941. "Union density" peaked in 1945-1946 and in 1954, when 35
percent of workers were union members. Although the percentages began
to fall, the number of union members continued to grow, from 17
million in 1954 to 20.2 million in 1978. But by 1983, membership had
dipped to 17.7 million (20.1 percent of workers).

"Since 1983, the union share of wage and salary workers has declined
in private nonagricultural industries from 17 percent to less than 10
percent, but the share has increased slightly in government, where it
stands at 37 percent. The 16.3 million U.S. workers who belonged to
unions in 2001 represented 13.5 percent of the total wage and salary
workforce."

I was really looking for projected growth numbers, but I understand if
they're not available. The information you offer me is definitely
worth $40. I like the contact data you provided, but if it's all from
2000, it probably isn't worth that much, as contacts change
frequently. If you have contact information that is more recent and
can provide some recruitment information, you'll get a tip.

About 2.4 million workers are under major collective bargaining
agreements (those covering 1,000 workers or more). In private
industry, bargaining is slated for about 31 percent of the 5.4 million
workers under major agreements.

Union Membership by State
State union membership rates continued to show a clear geographic
pattern in 2001. All states in the East North Central, Middle
Atlantic,
and Pacific divisions had union membership rates above the national
average
of 13.5 percent, while all states in the East South Central and West
South
Central divisions had rates below it. Overall,
29 states had union membership rates below that of the U.S. average,
while
21 states and the District of Columbia had higher rates.

Four states had union membership rates over 20.0 percent in
2001--New
York, Hawaii, Alaska, and Michigan (in rank order). Two states had
membership rates below 5.0 percent--North Carolina and South Carolina.

Half of the 16.3 million union members in the U.S. lived in six
states--
California, New York, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
These
states accounted for only 35 percent of wage and salary employment
nationally.

The above estimates are obtained from the Current Population
Survey (CPS), which provides the basic information on the labor force,
employment, and unemployment. The survey is conducted monthly for the
Bureau of Labor Statistics by the U.S. Census Bureau from a
scientifically
selected national sample of about 60,000 households. The union
membership
and earnings data are tabulated from one-quarter of the CPS monthly
sample
and are limited to wage and salary workers. Excluded are all
self-employed
workers.

I belonged to a few unions long ago because it was required. I did not
feel these unions were beneficial to me. I have met a few people who
thought the union they belonged to was wonderful because it got them
pay raises, job security and improved benefits. I some cases the jobs
moved overseas partly to escape the union. My guess is most unions are
shrinking rather than growing, so the union leaders want to keep the
numbers secret so proof of shrinkage is difficut to obtain. Neil
