whychild,

TROUTS and VICAR, found on the following page sound like what you
need!
http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/gmm/fwgcomp.shtml

Here's a list of free demos, but you'll need to pay to keep them.
http://www.webattack.com/Shareware/gmm/swgcomp.shtml

More options for freeware and shareware:

I have not tried the above applications, but I have tried many other
programs, none of which worked to MY satisfaction. If the above
programs don't work well for you, you may want to consider spending
$40-$60, depending on the vendor, for a wonderful program called After
Shot, by Jasc.
 http://www.jasc.com
You can download a free trial version, and
http://www.Amazon.com may still have a rebate offer on this program.

I don't own stock in the company, but I must extoll the virtues of
this program. I wish I had had it two years ago, as it has saved me
hours of work. It allows you to open 1-3 albums at a time, dragging
photos from one to another. When you get all the photos you want to
work on in one album, you use a "Batch process" which will resize the
photos to the size you indicate. In the process, it reduces the size
of the file greatly, keeping the resolution. For sending in e-mail, or
posting on the web, the quality is wonderful. I am extremely pleased
with this rather inexpensive program. It also has a print layout
applet, a "Stitch application" which allows you to make panoramic
pictures. It has a very user friendly interface as well.

I hope the freeware works for you, but if not, give After Shot a try!

Good luck.

As they say in North Carolina, where I used to live, 'Why Child, thank you"
Thank you for the stars and the bonus! I wish you well in your resizing efforts!

Dear whychild-ga
You could also do it online at
http://www.netmechanic.com/GIFBot/optimize-graphic.htm - the 'how to
do it' guide is very straight forward.
