I am looking for cheapest DIRECT roundtrip flight i can find from new york
city (LGA, JFK or Newark) to Amsterdam. I'm flying in January and I
don't have time for flying standby or anything like that. I've tried
orbitz.com and expedia.com and similar methods and found fares in the
mid-$400 range. Where can I find a cheaper fare?

ideally i would like to leave late night thursday, jan. 16, and return
the afternoon of monday, jan. 30. a late night wednesday (jan. 15)
departure would be OK too -- i get out of work at 7ish and want to
catch a flight after work.

I tried Hotwire.com, which I have found has the cheapest flights. 
But, it could only give me a price in the $400 range.  You could try
Priceline.com.  There you put in the price that you want.  However, be
warned, that if they find it, they will buy it for you.  Which is why
I can't check it for you.
