Dear plibin,
Thanks for your question!
I contacted the folks at Erlich Foods, who supply Disneyworld with the
drumsticks you loved there. The short answer to your question is that
you can’t get small amounts of those smoked drumsticks right now, but
you will be able to after the first quarter of 2003. You can get
smoked turkey drumsticks now from another company, Shadybrook Farms,
at a Price Chopper store about 30 miles from Boston. Now, here’s the
long answer.
Jim Weston, one of the owners at Erlich Foods, told me that the reason
his
drumsticks are so good is that they actually smoke them in a smoker
for a
whole day. According to Weston, every other company just cooks them in
“liquid smoke,” which has a strong, different, flavor, and “turns the
skin to
rubber. “
Erlich Foods used to supply Sunday House with smoked turkey legs,
and Sunday House had a machine which could package them in
pairs. However, Sunday House’s plant burned down, and they’re no
longer
available in small lots. Erlich Foods is working on a packaging system
to
prepare them in small lots, but it won’t be available until the second
quarter of 2003. The “strips” of 10 drumsticks will be available on
their website then. The website is currently:
http://www.erlichfoods.com/index.html
That site will then direct you to a separate site which will sell to
individual customers like you.
If you can’t wait until the second quarter of 2003, you can order a
30 pound box of the drumsticks now from Erlich. Since the legs average
18 oz each, you would get about 26 or 27 of them. At $1.50/pound,
that would be $45.00 per box. The shipping cost is pretty prohibitive
because
they only FedEx them. The shipping could be $100 dollars. They
actually ship them frozen (they have special industrial flash freezers
that don’t mush them up.) They don’t recommend that you freeze
them at home, but they last in the fridge 21 days. The phone number
to order from Erlich Foods is 310- 475-0777. If you are really dying
for that exact drumstick, and with the holidays coming up, maybe you
could buy the 30/lb box, give some away as gifts, and/or have a dinner
party?
Another long-term solution will be: Erlich is trying to “drum up” more
business
among folks who sell the drumsticks from “carts” like the one that
sold
you yours in Disneyworld. When these “cart” businesses get going in
various cities, Erlich will “nominate” other companies to distribute
to
the carts. Those major meat distributors can also sell in small lots
to you. You would be able to find out who they are in your city by
going to the
Erlich foods site next winter/spring.
If you are willing to try another company, there is Shadybrook Farms,
that makes smoked drumsticks. They’re at:
http://www.shadybrookfarms.com/products/sbfproducts_ready.htm
They list three store chains that sell their smoked drumsticks:
Deca, Price Chopper/Golub, and Trucci’s.
The Price Chopper Store closest to Boston is in Marlborough, 25-30
miles
away. It is at 240 East Main St., Marlborough, MA 01752.
Definitely call ahead to make sure they’re in stock or request them.
The phone number is 508-480-0109.
I’m told the nearest Trucci’s Supermarket to you is in Taunton, about
45
miles away. All their stores are listed at:
http://www.trucchis.com/ourstores.html
Deca appears to be a chain of military commissaries?
Anyway, I hope you like the ones from Shadybrook, or if not, can
manage to get them somehow through Erlich.
I searched using the phrases: smoked turkey legs, smoked turkey
drumsticks, and smoked meats.
Before you rate this answer, please ask me to clarify or add anything
I didn’t address. I will be happy to follow up. All the best, cath-ga |
