Someone close to me just won political office in California. As a
campaign promise :-), he said he would place all his assets in a
blind trust. His assets are substantial and he anticipates a lengthy
career in politics. Hence, the cost of setting up the blind trust is
secondary to getting top-notch experts.

He would prefer to deal with a firm in California, although he would
definitely go out of state if that is the best solution.

A great answer would include the names of 5 firms which have arranged
blind trusts for politicians, and perhaps 1-2 paragraphs on choosing
the individual who might serve as blind trustee.

Due to time constraints, an abbreviated answer within 18-24 hours
would be more helpful than a comprehensive answer which takes
days/weeks to compile. Just point me in the right direction... :-)

All comments greatly appreciated !

Hello nronronronro-ga,

I have spent a good portion of time today researching your inquiry,
and have contacted a number of firms including financial institutions,
trust companies, law firms and political candidates' offices.
Ultimately, you will need a law firm to set up a blind trust, or as it
is legally referred to, a 10b5-1 Trading Plan.

In my conversations with each firm about recommending a trustee, I was
told that selecting a trustee is an extremely personal decision, as
that individual will be legally responsible for overseeing all of your
friend's financial assets and will review all contributions to it. I
was advised to communicate to you that if at all possible, you or your
friend or a family friend should recommend a financial planner that
YOU trust, rather than relying on someone else's recommendation, if
possible. If this is not possible, most firms that set up blind trusts
work with financial firms (e.g., Merrill Lynch, or the like) and can
recommend a financial planner to act as trustee if desired. You will
have to take this matter up with the firm you choose to set up the
blind trust.

I should note that blind trusts are not common, though they have
recently seen a rise in use due to executives attempting to avoid
insider trading accusations. For this reason, finding a law firm with
"top-notch experts" in blind trusts was a difficult challenge, but
there are a few out there. I can make no guarantees that any
particular firm below will take on your friend as a client, however
the firms below all have lawyers who have set up or managed blind
trusts for politicians in the past, and in some cases, very prominent
politicians.

Note: All but the first two firms below are located in California. The
first two are in Washington D.C., and listed only because the contacts
there have deeper expertise in this area. All of the firms below have
consented to my passing along their business contact information below
to you.

Amazing work in a short period. It's funny how one can read
something, and immediately see "craftsmanship" in the details. My
friend/politico is famous...and also happens to be a nice guy. When
he and his wife thank me tomorrow, I'll tell him, "It was all Rippo!"
  Great job.
