Question ID: 106162
How many film schools exist in the USA? I'm interested in both the
number of accredited undergraduate and graduate schools which offer
degrees in motion picture production as well as un-accredited
professional schools offering courses in film production (which might
range from 1 day courses to 1 year or longer programs.)

A list of ALL film schools in the US is probably not available. Would
a list of most be an acceptable answer?

Thank you for your response. I am not looking for a list of film
schools, but rather a reasonably authoritative answer about HOW MANY
film schools exist in the country. As indicated in the question, I'm
interested in both academic and professional schools. I'll be happy
to clarify further if needed. Thanks, again.

Hello studioboss,

I looked at a variety of sites and did not get a consistent answer.
Different organizations list different numbers for film schools in
this country. Below, I have listed many of the sites with the number
of schools they mentioned.

Next Frame: THE UFVA STUDENT FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL; USA
http://www.temple.edu/ufva/dirs/text52usa.htm
This site lists a comprehensive list of on-line
film/video/communication schools and programs by state. There are 556
listed for the US.

While Cinemedia lists 254 film schools for the US.

Film Schools list 51 schools in the US.

The Academy of Film Schools lists 30 schools in the US.

Film School Confidential: The Insider's Guide to Film Schools
http://www.lather.com/fsc/
This site is for a book about film schools. The site lists 26 schools
that offer M.F.A.’s in film production in the US.

Yahoo lists 12 graduate programs in film.
<http://dir.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Movies_and_Film/Film_Schools/College_and_University_Departments_and_Programs/Graduate_Programs/>

At ACEJMC Accredited Programs, 2002 – 2003 lists 105 journalism
schools that are accredited. Only 3 have film in their names.

I am certain that many of the schools that are in the lists above are
accredited. But, I could not find a list of ‘accredited’ schools,
other than at the site above.

I hope this helps. If that isn’t enough information. Please ask me
for a clarification.
Thank you

This question probably demanded a higher fee. I had no idea such a
statistic would be so hard to find. I'm satisfied with the
researcher's answer to my first question posted on Google.
