How can I focus a projector on a card about 6 inches from the lens?
I am using a (cheap) $3000 digital projector, 800x600 pixel
resolution.
I have tried but it is always blurry. The focus adjustments seem to
be tuned only for distant screens.
The answer to this question must contain a solution, and five stars
for a cheap solution. I do not want an answer that says it is
difficult or impossible even if it is! Creative solutions are ok. |

Some researchers might be able to help if you can give us some
specifics of your digital projector, especially the name.

I am using an InFocus LP335. But an answer for any portable digital
projector is acceptable.

Do you have any InFocus software installed on the computer that is
driving the projector?

Sorry I meant to add this as well. What are you doing that requires
you to focus on something 6 inches from the projector. There may be
another way to achieve the same thing without using the projector.

Unfortunatly I am not aware of what software is driving the projector.
However I'm fairly certain the software cannot change the focus, and
that if it could, it could do no better then the manual focus.
Why do I need to do this? I am setting up a display unit for computer
generated art. The projector will be built into a pedestal and
project images on a white square card suspended, at a 45 degree angle,
about six inches above the projector. The images must be as crisp as
possible for this setup to have the effect I want.

After discussion with friends, I have ruled out using a pinhole-camera
approach. Although this would provide the correct focus, it would
block out too much of the brightness.

I have a cheap and wacky idea that could work.
First find the minimal distance that you can focus the projector to
the clarity you require and place a mirror there, then reflect this
image onto another mirror placed at 45 degrees to reflect the image
onto the card.
You would have to be accurate, but whilst we are all throwing ideas
into the hat....

I like the concept! However the image would have expanded to a much
larger size. So, although I would have a sharp image, it would again
have around the same resolution as a blurry image.
I posted another question with GA worth $40 but was boring and
technical. Its amazing how this question, a question I think is a
much more interesting question, can stir so much of a response even
though I only offer $2. =) Google Rocks.
