Dear stairman -
I am little confused at your question. Are you talking Windows
2000 Pro. Office 2000? Would you please be a little more specific.
Either one I can help you with as I use both on a daily basis and have
set them all up appropriately.

thanks
Morningstar

Dear Stairman -
Please go into Control Panel> Users > and see how many user
profiles you have installed on this computer. You should have two or
three. Administrator and Administrators are both default setups for
Windows 2000. You should then be able to see the promissions for
each account. There should also be a check box above the user
profile list. It says User must enter a user name and password to
use this computer. Deselect this button. This should eliminate your
need to use a password to log on. It should also give you access to
load this program you are tryig to run. If this works let me know and
I will post as the answer.

Thank you,
Morningstar

Hi whalpert-ga,

I am interested in answering your question, but I believe that, to answer
it well, your question will require more time and effort than the average
amount of time and effort associated with this price. Here is a link to
guidelines about pricing your question,

If you both raise your price and also post a clarification here, the
system will notify me and I will take another look at your question.

Hi, stairman:

I think you are talking about using the operating system Windows 2000
Professional. It sounds like your user account does not have
"administrator" privileges, and this is the cause of inability to
install certain software packages.

If you have no recollection of setting the password for the account
"Administrator" (which has administrator privileges), you might try
some of the obvious choices (blank password, password "password" or
"admin").

Otherwise you are in the awkward position of having to reinstall the
operating system, as far as I know, to regain control of the
Administrator account. There is no option, that I can recall, for
installing Windows 2000 Professional without user accounts and
passwords. This is an option on the "DOS" line of Windows operating
systems that ended with Millenium (and included Win98), but has never
been a feature for the "NT" line of Microsoft OS's (including Win2K
and XP).

If it makes you feel any better, I forgot the administrator password
on my Win2K box soon after setting it up, and my solution was to
reinstall the operating system. I've also done this on NT, but so far
(cross my fingers), I did not have to do it on Windows XP (which would
be painful, because of the "locking" mechanism, I imagine).

In future just use the Administrator account to add your regular user
account to the (local) Administrator group, and then you can use your
regular account if push comes to shove, to reset the Administrator
password.

There's a detailed summary of the Windows 2000 installation process
here:

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/win2k_pro_install.asp

which explains what I think you were referring to as using the system
without using "user-password".

Basically at one point in the install process you either choose to log
in each time you start to use the computer, or else the operating
system can assume the same user is logging in each time (and only
requires the password the first time).

Another thought: is it possible you gave the same password for both
the Administrator and the non-administrator account that you created
on the machine?
