Hello--
Arthur Andersen was self-insured by one of its wholly-owned companies,
the Bermuda-based Professional Services Insurance Company, Ltd. So
Andersen insured itself, through a so-called "captive insurer." That
subsidiary was declared insolvent (see
http://securities.stanford.edu/news-archive/2002/20020401_Headline06_WeilSpurgeon.htm
), and I believe the fiction of an insurer is now gone--Andersen is
paying its own losses.

Charles E. Boyle, "Arthur Andersen - Three Strikes and You're Out."
InsuranceJournal.com, May 13, 2002.

Art Toalston, "Andersen reneges on $217M settlement with Ariz. Baptist
foundation victims." National Association of Church Business
Administration, April 3, 2002, reporting a Baptist News Service story.

I was unable to find the total that Andersen has paid out via its
captive insurer, but it is going to have to pay $217 million in the
coming years as part of a lawsuit by the Baptist Foundation, a
now-defunct former Andersen client. This is one of the largest
settlements ever paid by a large accounting firm. Andersen reneged
once on the deal, but then the settlement was revived.

Andersen is shutting down operations all over the world, and by the
end of this month, it should be down to only 1,000 employees, from
26,000 (some websites say 28,000) at one time:

Christopher Cole. "Arthur Andersen office closes in Sarasota,"
News-Sentinel (Bradenton, FL)
http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/newssentinel/4421921.htm

The company is the target of many, many lawsuits, still ongoing, and I
was unable to find a running total of what it must pay as a result.
Andersen is not a public company, and so it does not file detailed
public financial statements.

So, to summarize, Andersen insured itself, and will be paying on its
own liabilities. Those liabilities, yet to be determined in full, are
immense.

To delve further into this for your project, try combinations of these
terms in Google and Google News. Put quotes around phrases in the
same way I did:

"arthur andersen"
insurance
insurer
bermuda
"professional services company"
total losses
lawsuits
payouts
fines

I hope that answers your question.

Timely and right on target. If only I had asked the proper spelling
of "Andersen", I would not have needed to ask the question that I did.
Nevertheless, it was great, thank you.
