I have an MS Word 2000 document that displays on screen in Print
Layout mode with a phantom-like grid in the background. It is as if
the document were using graph paper, except the grid does not bleed to
the edges. I have turned off the background, turned off themes, and it
still is present. It is not, however, visible in Print Preview and
does not print out in hardcopy. I have reinstalled Word, have examined
the templates on my system, and none have this characteristic. I have
opened the files on other machines and they are present there too. I
can provide a copy if that would help.
Thanks

It sounds like your Drawing Grid is turned on. To turn it off:

Make sure your Drawing Toolbar is visible. It is likely to be at the
bottom of your screen, under your document. If it is not visible, show
it by selecting form the menu bar - View/Toolbars/Drawing

Once you can see the Drawing Toolbar, the first button fromthe left
should say Draw. Click Draw and select Grid. The Drawing Grid dialog
box should appear. About 2/3 down, there is a check box that says
"Display gridlines on screen". Uncheck it, click OK, and your lines
should go away.

For future reference: If you open Help, go to the Index tab, enter
"grid" as the keyword and click Search, a list of ways to make grids
show up appears. The information about View Drawing Gridlines is the
sixth entry (at least it is sixth on my system).

Good luck!
