cachalot-ga,

Are the comments provided by denco-ga and koz-ga sufficient, or would
you like a researcher to work on this to provide a more thorough
answer? Thanks.

denco-ga had a satisfactory answer, and should get the fee.
kozga did not because a systems needs two units, one base and one receiver

Sorry about that. Prairie Geomatics
(http://www.prairie.mb.ca/price_csi.htm) carries the necessary CDA-2
antenna for US$600. That still puts you under the $5,000 mark.

It appears it gets down to Trimble, Ashtech and Corvallis
for the "mid-range" but accurate GPS units...

http://www.cmtinc.com/nav/frprod.html

has a variety of systems, but it will have to be a post
processing solution before you can attain the accuracy
you are looking for within the sub-$5000 price range.

Corvallis has:

MARCH II-E 3.7 PKG - List Price: $4,385.00
MC-GPS 3.7 PKG - List Price: $5,650.00

Both of the above are with their beacon receiver package
and are $1200 cheaper if bought without it.

Here's another that I have found:

http://www.navtechgps.com/supply/dgpsmax.asp

$3,350, accuracy of "better than one inch at rates up to 5Hz"
