There was an old comic strip character created by a man named Milt
Gross (1895-1953)named 'Count Srewloose of Tooloose' that ran in the
Sunday papers from 1929 to 1934. I am looking for any infomation (and
images if poss) relating to this character (not so much the artist
Milt Gross, although it may be useful!) I know that the character
appeared in two cartoon animations made by MGM studios in the 1930s.
Any articles that may have been written about this character would be
perfect, i have searched the internet myself and found almost nothing
on this character (although quite a lot on Milt Gross.) Your help
would be much appreciated!!

Hello,

I was only able to find one image online from the strip "Count
Screwloose of Tooloose". It is the last image on the following
page:
http://www.lambiek.net/gross_m.htm

In an article on Milt Gross in the American National Biography
Online, Robert C. Harvey writes a short description of the comic
strip and its characters. Here's the URL (I won't quote here due
to copyright restrictions):
http://www.elmhurst.edu:8113/articles/16/16-00665.html

The following page at the Michigan State University Libraries'
Special Collections Division has a list of publications having to
do with Milt Gross. The page is _very_ long, so use the "Find in
Page" feature of your browser and search for "screwloose":
http://www.lib.msu.edu/comics/rri/crri/coun.htm

Among the resources listed on the above page are a couple of books
which look especially promising:

"100 Years of American Newspaper Comics : an Illustrated Encyclopedia"
According to the info on MSU's page, this book contains an entry
for the strip. Here is a link to Amazon.com where you can buy the
book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0517124475/qid%3D1037287379/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-2900272-5987345

"Grossly Exaggerated : The Manic Worlds of Milt Gross"
This one actually contains reprints of the comic strip, according
to the MSU page.

I couldn't find "Grossly Exaggerated:..." in a search of Amazon.com
or Barnes & Noble's site, but if you give your local library the
titles, they may be able to find both of these books for a small
fee (it's $1 per book at my local library).

There are a few Usenet threads which mention the strip:

"Milt Gross & Count Screwloose of Tooloose"
The only potentially useful info in this one is that the dog's
name in the cartoon was "Iggy."

"Re: Joe's Unofficial WB Review/Reference Letter #1"
Nothing really useful here, except that it mentions that the "World
Encyclopedia of Cartoons" might be helpful.

"Screwloose (was Re: Joe's Unofficial WB Review/Reference Letter #1)"
According to this article, the information of which was apparently
taken from "The History of Animation," the two films based on
this cartoon were "Jitterbug Follies" and "Wanted: No Master."

The IMDb (Internet Movie Database) has some information about the
two MGM films. Here are the URLs to the IMDb pages:

"Jitterbug Follies"
http://yoursay.imdb.com/Title?0031509

"Wanted: No Master"
http://yoursay.imdb.com/Title?0032109

martin63, a commenter on the IMDb page for "Wanted: No Master,"
has the following to say about Gross' strip:

"One of the unjustly forgotten comic strips, Milt Gross's "Count
Screwloose
of Tooloose" used to house it's nutty hero in a sanitarium. The Count
later
escaped and settled in suburbia and that is where we find him and J.R.
the
Wonder Dog in this pull-the-stops-out animated adaptation from
MGM..."

You may also find the "Milt Gross Biography" interesting though it
only mentions the strip and doesn't give details on it:
