We have a huge quantity of childrens gardening gloves (26,000 pairs)
that we would like to dispose of at cost (10p UK Stirling) to someone.

Who in the world uses large quantities of childrens gardening gloves,
perhaps an Asian country? They may even be suitable for Asian women as
they tend to have small hands. Could they be of benefit to an
organisation such as the Red Cross?

If a buyer results from your research/efforts a tip of $100 will
gladly be given (we do and have tipped other researchers!).

To help you please see pictures at

Many Thanks

Hi selfy,

Wow, 26,000 pairs! That’s a lot of gloves!

Here’s what I’m thinking –With that kind of quantity your best bet is
going to be to sell the gloves to a LARGE international relief
organization. Many of the small relief organizations rely solely on
donations and won’t be able to afford your bulk lot.

What you don’t want to do is “pre-disqualify” anyone. The people who
run these organizations are extremely creative. They may see a way to
use your product that you haven’t considered.

Your idea of using the glove for small women is a good one. Also
consider that they might not be used for gardening. A simple cotton
glove like yours may be just what’s needed to keep small hands warm in
a cool, but not cold, climate. Or, what about a medical use, to
protect a hand that has been injured? These may be points you want to
bring up in your promotional literature when you approach these
organizations.

I’ve also included some smaller organizations. Like I said, these are
more likely to be looking for donations, but maybe if the price and
quantity are right they will consider a purchase.

Finally, although I assume you’ve probably already gone this route, I
have listed at the bottom of the page, some retailers who might be
interested in purchasing a bulk lot of gloves.

Selling to humanitarian organisations: is it an obstacle course, or is
there a discrepancy between supply and demand?

Published in International Aid & Trade Review (Volume 1, Issue 4,

2002 event in Geneva, 30-31 January 2002. Reproduced with the kind
authorization of the Review.

“Although the figures are tempting, selling to humanitarian
organisations is often perceived by many potential suppliers as
something less pleasant than running over an obstacle course at
night….”

That should give you enough leads to get you going. I’m sure with
those and the additional links you’ll find someone willing to help you
unload all those gloves. At this point the key is going to be how you
market them. Get creative with your promotion and those gloves should
move!

Oh, I had one other thought ... if you’d like help with that promotion
maybe you want to post a new question asking for ideas for uses of
children’s gardening gloves. I think if you can present a long list of
ideas to an organization they might see something there that catches
their eye.

Good luck with your venture –
