chicago48: I can not begin to answer your question, but I do have some comments. I used to sell advertising full-time, professionally. Although billboards is a medium that I've never worked with, my experiences in radio, print, and the Internet are relevant. Basically your question is one faced my pro ad reps daily, when they are prospecting and developing their own sales leads. You mentioned NASCAR. If I were to pursue the NASCAR business, I would first educate myself about NASCAR- the company, the competition, and current marketing challenges in today's business climate. The next step is to find the person who holds the purse strings for the billboard budget. This could be a media buyer at NASCAR's agency. It could be a marketing person within the organization. It could be a "product manager" for the particular service, product, or item that they are promoting on the cars. The same process holds true for any advertiser that you know of that does business with NASCAR. In short, after years of success in the business, I am unaware of any easy shortcuts to get at the information that you're seeking. Selling advertising is a high-pressure business, and success requires great drive, dogged persistence, creativity in finding the correct person to pitch the business to, and strong and creative presentation skills once you've established that contact. Good luck! I hope that my comments are helpful to you. |
