Request for Question Clarification by webadept-ga on 14 Nov 2002 13:06 PST
Hi,

Here's the output of the program thus far. All the names are there. It
did not find a few of them, and those are left in All Caps. There are
two in this list, and I did my best to find some other source that
would show me one of those names, but to no availe. The name is
MACUELDOWNEY. Even searched a few map sites to see if it was hiding
there. One adaptation would be to send the names it could not find and
alter on it's own to a seperate output file, allowing a human to alter
them and paste them into the other file. But that would be up to you.
Again, I couldn't find MACUELDOWNEY any where.

Since it was not 100% successful, and I couldn't find a resource that
would possibly help with it, I decided to post this clarification
first and see if the results are successful enough to warrent the
answer.

As far as I can tell the choices it made are pretty good. For instance
MACKENZIE |Mackenzie instead of MacKenzie.. I looked that one up on
the MacKenzie clan web site and found they alter the case down for the
K more often than not as well. McKenzie however is found more often
with the upper case K.

Here are the results and I look forward to your responce. The output
file seperates the before and after fields with a pipe "|" .

webadept:

Looks good. Actually does significantly better than the Market Data
Research / Dunn and Bradstreet converter.

As far as MACUELDOWNEY, this appears to be a misspelling of
MACELDOWNEY, and is reported by Google as a "did you mean...", and
this results in MacEldowney. Similar for MCNNES "did you mean" MCINNES
which then becomes McInnes.
Google is also all over MCMEEKIN, it's McMeekin.
And Google finds one LEDERHILL, with no spelling suggestions.

So: Please add a Google "did you mean" detector, and have four output
files:
Hit, Ambiguous, DidYouMean, Miss, and each entry shows up in only one
of these files. The Ambiguous would be for when the majority choice
was not the winner by at least by a factor of $disambiguation, right?
For instance, my take on LEBLEU is it's LeBleu instead of Leblue, when
I Google using the English-only pages. So, when the results are
"ambiguous" the human operator should get a heads-up.

And might as well use the output format
   "MCKENZIE" => "McKenzie",
to suggest that this table go into a perl program, which is also my
choice for this kind of work.

So changes are: 4 files, $disambiguation, didyoumean, perl hash format
output, with ""'s, even on the left, since O'NEIL will be there
sometimes. If this costs more (up to $25, say) just mention it and
I'll tip the balance.

Otherwise, hey, looks good to go. I suggest prettying up the code and
having good comments (gee, have I mentioned comments before?) since
it'll be public at least at GA and have your name on it.

By the way, I use perl just rarely enough that I forget enough
important details between uses that I end up back in the doc, so I'm
happy to pay for this code.

Best,
Evan

Hey,

yes, I'll post it soon. My son's birthday and lots of busy stuff
around here. Not an excuse, just a fact of life. I'll have it posted
pretty soon. Just need to put in your requested changes.

Hi,

Here's your new Perl script. Was a pleasure to work on this. Really
nice to do something these days that's fun. I have a large list of
names that are already cased out which the program will use. If it
doesn't have to look it up from the web, then of course it's going to
move much faster. It will also build on that file as it finds matches
which are clean matches.

The switches for the program are -f for the input file name and -r for
the amount of difference you are willing to allow between the highest
found case set and the next highest found case set.

You can get the program at :
http://www.lucidmatrix.com/uploads/name_case.zip

Because of the large word library it would be a huge hassle to paste
it here, and downloading it will be much better than trying to block
and copy and get all the line breaks right.

So, have a good time with your new answer and let me know who it goes.

Just 100% perfect response. Now I just have to figure out how to give
webadept a $20 tip...
