I'm looking for a Harvard style reference (for an assignment)on a
paper given in 1898 by W C Roberts-Austen, Professor of Metallurgy,
Royal School of Mines, containing the following extract on the
accidental discovery (by Mond, Ludwig and Langer, Carl)of the carbonyl
reaction, later used (as 'the Mond Process')in the refining of nickel.
"..it is the only method which extracts a metal from ore by combining
it with a gas from which it can later be released"

Any idea where this paper was published?

Thanks to rbn and unstable. I had already checked out suggested links
and drew blanks. The only other piece of information I have is that
the purpose of Roberts-Austen's paper was apparently to evaluate a
pilot manufacturing plant in (I think) Birmingham, England for
refining nickel by the previously unknown chemical process in which CO
acts as a ligand and donates a lone pair of electrons to the empty
orbital of a transition element, in this case nickel.
Best wishes.

hi hwyl,

i noticed from the web that a Mr Cees van de Velde has researched on
Iron-Carbon diagrams and list two publications (1897, 1899) by Sir
W.C. Roberts-Austen checkout

http://members.lycos.nl/cvdv/ironcarbondiagrams.htm

Sir Austen is more known for his work with Iron and Carbon, did not
come across any association of him with Mond, although they both work
on Metallurgy. Perhaps the quote was more of a simple speech
delivered at a Society gathering and did not make it to an official
publication? If there is, a name for the publication would help in
research.

Have you tried, by any chance, the Journal of the American Chemical Society?
