mireille157, The spell-checking software that comes with Microsoft Word is not language-specific. It takes whatever Dictionary you have downloaded and specified, and compares the text in your document to that. There are numerous different Dictionaries available: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc., etc. -- and even a Medical Dictionary, which contains medical terminology (including Latin disease names). Word just happens to come pre-loaded with the English Dictionary, because the majority of the people who buy Word need the English Dictionary for spell-checking. Are you sure you're not looking for an add-on French Dictionary which Microsoft Word's spell-checking program can use to check documents written in French? Thanks, aceresearcher |

When installing Word, you have the option of specifying languages in which you will be writing: by enabling these, Word installs with the dictionaries already loaded. Once the program is running, you can select a language setting from the box in the top right corner of the screen. In the case of French, you can perform both spelling and grammar checks in any of a dozen local dialects, from Moroccan to proper France's French. Downloading additional dictionaries may add some functionality, but the dictionary included standard is excellent, even if the grammar check misses some obvious errors. |
