I would like to know the best way of finding a husband ! I work in
London full-time and find most men are not interested in committing
and raising a family. I am also very cultured and artistic and need to
be with educated, sophisticated people! Any tips welcome.

Greetings Clarette! You ask for tips on finding a husband and if I
could bottle and sell the perfect formula for that, I'd be a rich
woman! lol However, there are many methods by which to meet
potential mates.

First of all, I would suggest you rephrase the message to yourself
about finding a husband. Consider thinking "I'm going to let my
future husband find me." :) This phrasing to yourself will take much
of the emotional pressure off the situation and allow you to be better
relaxed and confident when meeting men.

You stated you prefer educated and sophisticated people so you need to
place yourself in areas where those people group. The first idea that
came to my mind was the Mensa society so I searched for one in London
and found a web site for the Mensa Under 35 (20-35 age group) located
at http://www.linkadoo.com/mensa.html. If you are between the ages of
20 and 35, you might consider contacting the group for membership in
Mensa and to attend their get-togethers. If you are not the 20-35 age
group, visit the main Mensa site at
http://www.londonmensa.org.uk/OldSite/ where there is contact
information for gatherings they coordinate.

Other sites within the British Mensa organization are located at
http://www.mensa.ie/menlinks.htm. Since there are many group in
Britain, you may want to take a holiday to one of the places lited and
check out the group in that area.

I found some contact information for a philosophical society in
London, if you enjoy that type of discussion. The pages were dated
but the contact information may still be relevant so I want to include
it for you. Visit http://members.aol.com/timlebon/phillon.htm and
http://www.netlondon.com/community/organisations/organisations.905163692.html
for more information.

Other ways to meet intellectuals and educated persons would be to
apply as a volunteer for area museums and art galleries. Also, check
the book shops in your area to see if any of them have book discussion
groups. University fundraisers and functions are also a wonderful
place to meet people and network.

I discovered a web site for Greater London Singles
(http://www.singlesonthego.com/london/networkinganddininggroups.html)
that included many social clubs and mixers including wine tasting
get-togethers. You may find useful links from that site as there were
many from which to choose.

An article titled "Alternatives to the Bridget Jones Method of Meeting
Men - Dining Club Survey Reveals Favoured Meeting Places" is located
at http://216.239.53.100/search?q=cache:sfF3scgzDcwC:www.clubsix.co.uk/ClubSix%2520Bridget%2520Jones%2520Alternative.doc+london+singles+dinners+professionals&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
(DOC version is at www.clubsix.co.uk/
ClubSix%20Bridget%20Jones%20Alternative.doc). A club is mentioned
there.

You might also consider joining a Yoga class or taking a night class
at a University in Literature or another subject in which you are
interested. There you would have the chance to meet mature
individuals who want to broaden their own knowledge base.

As for exclusive dating services, there is one titled "Brain Appeal"
which you might consider joining. Membership is by invitation only
and you will have to apply but it may prove to be a good way to meet
intelligent men in London.

Their website states "Finding intelligent life on the net has become a
non-trivial task in this modern age. brainAppeal is the best place to
find other geeks, no matter the flavor of geek, whether they be
computer geeks, math geeks, or art geeks. They are all here, waiting
for you, in all their glory. brainAppeal is a community of
intelligent people. We have developed a system of human moderation
that only accepts profiles of intelligent people. Currently the
rejection rate is 23%."

The web site is located at http://www.brainappeal.com/ where there is
a search program available. I did a test run in their search engine
for "looking for man between the ages of 25 and 40" with "england" as
a keyword and two possibilities came up:
http://www.brainappeal.com/detail.php?username=squigs and
http://www.brainappeal.com/detail.php?username=britmuso. I am not a
fan of general dating services (too many wild cards in my opinion) but
this exclusive service seems pretty cool.

Another place you may want to register is
http://www.bookloversmm.com/. Their site states "Booklovers
Match-o-Matic matches up individuals of all ages and backgrounds who
share a common interest, a love of reading or writing. We are oriented
towards cultured individuals who are looking for longterm
relationships or correspondence based on shared values and interests.
While members are concentrated in the US and Canada, we also have many
from other countries worldwide."

The registration and service is free and, again, you may find some
good possibilities at Booklovers as they have a United Kingdom
membership. After joining, you can search within categories of
interest with keyword criteria or have the program automatically match
your profile with others like yours.

Lastly, for exclusive dating services, there is Great Expectations.
Their web site is located at http://www.great-expectations.net and
they offer a dating service for professionals. This may be of interest
to you as they include England in their services.

What a wonderful answer, Journalist!

I can heartily endorse Mensa as a good place to meet a husband. I met
my wonderful husband of 22 years through Mensa. This seems to be a
family tradition: my mother met my stepfather through Mensa, as well.
