oraccomp,

Thanks so much for your question about firefighters in the UK. As
anywhere else in world, some of the bravest men and women you will
ever find, work for the fire department. The tragedies of 9/11
brought to the forefront just what true heroes these people are.

In 1996, the Board of Trustees of the Firefighters Memorial Trust Fund
set up a database of firefighters in the UK who had lost their lives
in the line of duty. The database has over 2,200 (2,258 to be exact)
names since the first recorded death of a firefighter in 1723. You can
take an average of that number to figure the number killed each year.
In 281 years, there have 2,258 firefighters killed. That averages out
to 8.05 firefighters per year killed in the UK while on duty. One
thing to keep in mind is that the number 2,258 is counting the over
990 that were killed from 1939-1945 during World War II.

Thank you again for your question and if you need any further
clarification, please let me know.

Regards,

-THV

The answer is probably spot on. I can't clarify the question better so
it's a good, right answer but not the ammunition I needed to shut a
friend up!

HE states that "as only two firemen have died since '75 in the line of
duty", their job is overpaid and not risky. I thought that quite a few
died regularly, eespecially too many to say the job was anything but
very risky. Thanks. Dave

I unfortunately can't provide the exact numbers since 1975, however,
to help you out, here is something that I think you can use:

From 1988 through 1992, there were 7 fire related fatalities of fire
brigade members in England and Wales. There were an additional 8
non-fire related (which includes automobile accidents) in those same
years.

Hi, to put things in perspective construction work in the UK is far
and above a more dangerous occupation. Making all things equal,
hour-per-hour worked. Construction workers average weekly wage is
similar to a firemans at present rates.
However, construction workers as a norm work many more hours, hence
earn more money.
Nevertheless I agree firemen deserve a better pay cheque, what seems
to have been missed by the media in the UK, is the UK government's
stance in this issue, namely they awarded themselves a 40% (mp's) pay
increase without any help from an independent pay review body.
