There was a little gnome

There was a little gnome
who had a little home
down in the middle
of the earth, earth, earth.

he was full of fun and frolic
But his wife was melancholic and
He never could divert her
Into mirth, mirth, mirth

Oh, he tried her with the wog
And the cantelunar dog
And the seal that squealed
Whenere' you pulled its tail, tail, tail.

But in spite of all he tried
She just sobby-wobbed and sighed
And.......?

What is the rest of this poem I memorised as a child for $ .50?
It was in Volume 16 of the children's anthology, The Children's Hour.
I learned it about 1957.
Thanks,
Wendy S. King

Hello Wendy,

Although the terms of service of Google Answers does not allow me to
quote you the full text of the poem (an excerpt from our researcher
guidelines):

"
...whether the source is online or offline--you may use only very
short excerpts; you must use quotation marks; ... and you must include
a link to the site where the material appears.
"

I am happy to say that I have found the poem you are looking for not
only in your book, The Children's Hour, but in another anthology
called "Young Years: Best Loved Stories and Poems For Little Children"
edited by Augusta Baker formerly of the New York Times. It is
published by The Parents'
Magazine Education Press, Inc. and copyright 1960 (this is the
anthology copyright, which is why it's after you had already read the
poem). A quick drive down to the biggest library in my city turned up
one copy that was misplaced some time ago, so I cannot tell you the
author of the poem, but I can prove that this poem is in this
anthology because another reader has recommended the book because of
"The Little Gnome". Their discussion post is linked to below.

This book is out of print, but is still in circulation thanks to
second hand dealers, and online auctions. I have found you a list of
18 sellers (through amazon.com) who would be able to ship the book to
you (linked below). If you are not comfortable with online
transactions or purchasing this book in its entirety, I will be more
than happy to verify this book's presence at your local libraries if
you would be so kind as to give me no more information other than your
zipcode. There you would be able to view the poem at your leisure.
Thank you for the opportunity to track down this hard to find poem for
you, and I hope it it is as rewarding as it is nostalgic.

My Bookfinder search seems to bring up quite a few more books than
yours, skermit - I suggest that Wendy go to
http://www.bookfinder.com, type in the title, and do the search for
herself. She can also search for "The Children's Hour" (edited by
Mee).
