Hi Clicker5!
You're apparently not the only one interested in this subject! Would
you believe that I found a complete Cessna history, from 1956 - 1986,
including "version changes"?
Here's a brief summary (copyright restrictions prohibit me from

You can see a detailed list of all of the changes made from year to
year and model to model at the Australian Cessna Register, maintained
by Cessna 172 enthusiasts:
The Australian Cessna Register - Cessna 172 History
http://www.skycam.com.au/172/172history.html
The Aviation Checkbook lists the following additional models:
Cessna 172n / 180 HP / FP Prop
Cessna 172 r
Cessna 172 RG
Cessna 172 s/SP
Apparently, there is also a 180 HP N model. Wow! :) (Don't mind me,
I adore airplanes.)

To try to track down information on the models not included by the
Australian Cessna Register, I went right to Cessna.com and found:
Skyhawk Model 172R - 160HP engine

http://skyhawk.cessna.com/spec_perf.chtml
Skyhawk Model 172S - 180HP engine

Searching a bit further found:
Skyhawk Model 172SP - 180HP engine

Model 172RG - 180HP engine

I hope this is the information you were looking for! If you need
further assistance, please ask. I'll be glad to help!

Hello missy-ga:
On the most recent models, the information states 172 S, and also 172 SP.
Do you know the difference, between 172 S and 172 SP?
Perhaps, I missed it when I read the tremendous amount of material.

Good morning!
I've searched a bit more on [ "Cessna 172" specs ], and every page has
brought up information about the 172SP, but no mention of the 172S.
Even a page dealing with Lycoming Manufacturing Company (which makes
Cessna engines) only mentions the "Cessna 172s Skyhawk SP", and one
from Plane and Pilot Magazine gives the SP specs as coming from the
"Cessna 172 Information manual:
Lycoming, Avco Lycoming, Textron Lycoming (near the bottom)
http://home.adelphia.net/~aeroengine/Lycoming.html
Cessna Skyhawk SP
http://www.planeandpilotmag.com/content/specs/2002/cessnaskyhawksp.html
I suspect they may be the same plane.
I've sent e-mail to Cessna to ask for confirmation of this, as I've
not been able to find any separate references on the web at all. I
ask your patience, it may take Cessna a day or two to get back to me.

Thank you missy-ga:
I appreciate the time and effort you are putting in on this.
When we are completed, I most certainly will give you a 5 star rating.
Also, perhaps, someone will make a comment on the difference of the
172 S, and the 172 SP.
Any and all comments are welcome.

Hi again!
I spoke with a representative at Cessna this morning, and asked her
for the difference between the Cessna 172S and the 172SP. She could
find no specs for an "S" model!
According to the specs she has, the SP ("Special Performance") is a
souped up version of the R - it has 20HP more and 100 pounds more
useful load. She suspects that in the numerous write-ups that have
appeared, some have referred to the SP as the S. The S and SP appear
to be just two different names for the same plane.
She faxed the SP specs to me that appear to confirm this. I've
converted them to .JPG images for you to download and inspect for
yourself.

(They are large images, but necessarily so to be able to read the
print.)
I hope this clears things up for you!

One more from me, then I'll stop, I promise!
Just received confirmation from Stephanie at Cessna:
"To: "'missy@[elided]"
Hello Missy,
Regarding the question you asked, the 172S and the 172SP refer to the same
model.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
