Hi katcarr, There is a very comprehensive article on how the government has been financed from 1790 - 1990 at: http://www.emory.edu/COLLEGE/ECON/faculty/ curran/Research%20Ideas/Wallis.pdf Prior to 1776, the US was a British Colony and therefore an "American" government didn't exist.
