Hello--

I have carefully researched your question and have your answer.

The Order of Caucasians, also known as the "Caucasian League," was
founded in Sacramento in 1876. At its peak it had some 10,000 members.
The founding members included: C. C. Hayden, W B G Keller, John P
Dalton, P S Queid, M Brennan, James K Berry and P S Dorney.

The Order of Caucasians was created under federal law "for the
protection and elevation of Caucasian labor, the promotion of social
and intellectual intercourse among its members, and the establishment
of a system of general philanthropy, charity and benevolence....."

One account indicates meetings of the Order of Caucasians were held
every Saturday night in one town named . An article by the Truckee -
Donner Historical Society, Inc., states: "New members were inducted
with secret initiations. The primary goal of this group was to
extinguish, through any means, the Chinese population from Truckee and
from California."

There is a lot of good information published here. The link is
http://truckeehistory.tripod.com/history6.htm

There is also an article discussing a gun fight involving this group.
The link is http://truckeehistory.tripod.com/history7.htm

I found an essay that discusses this group. The link is
http://www.term-papers.us/ts/ea/hsz23.shtml

An article in the Asian Law Journal also discusses this group. The
link is http://www.boalt.org/ALJ/Volume_7/vol7_articles.html

An article in the California Law Review also discusses the group. The
link is http://weber.ucsd.edu/~dsilva/Chang.htm

Another good article can be found at the Adams Museum and House web
site. The link is http://adamsmuseumandhouse.org/chinese.htm

Also, you may read some newspaper abstracts of the Truckee Weekly
Tribune. The link is http://webpages.cwia.com/~mficklin/newsrefs.html

To conduct this research, I searched the following terms: California
"Order of Cuacasians," "Caucasian League"

I hope this helps! If you need any clarification, please don't
hesitate to ask!

Any idea on where to find the actual organizational structure,
by-laws, incorporation, or membership rosters for the several local
units? The general references are interesting, but don't help a great
deal on the functions of the organization.
Thanks.

Hello--

Thanks for your request.

I have searched on Infotrac, search engines, and the California
Secretary of State database and have not been able to find much of
this information online.

I have found a pretty interesting membership roster on RootsWeb.com.
It has the names of officers and partial rosters for some of the local
chapters. You may read this list at
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CASANFRA/1999-03/0921120779

I also have a few recommendations.

First to find any incorporation records, you may want to try calling
the California Secretary of State offices. The phone number is
(916)653-6814. The Secretary of State is the agency that is
responsible for incorporating groups.

The Truckee - Donner Historical Society seems to have a great deal of
information about this group. You may want to give them a call or put
your request in writing to them. The address is P.O. Box 893, Truckee,
CA. 96160. The phone number is (530) 582-0893. They may have some
historical documents like the ones you're speaking of, including
organization structure, by-laws, incorporation, or membership rosters.

Further, I would recommend contacting the California Historical
Society, if the Truckee-Donner Historical Society doesn't have the
information you're looking for. The California Historical Society can
be reached at: California Historical Society, 678 Mission Street, San
Francisco CA 94105
