Question ID: 109035
I'm trying to get the name of a series that I think ran on Masterpiece
Theater about 15-25 years ago and have googled in vain. It was about
an English schoolmaster a la Mr. Chips and the only thing in my memory
is something like "In the Glory of their Days," which is incorrect.
I'm fairly certain that "of their days" or "in their time" was in the
title. Thank you.

It is always difficult to be completely sure that an answer based on a
questioner's description of a song, a film or a literary work, for
example, is correct. In this case, your description is very specific
and my choice for an answer fits your description especially well.

I believe the program series you are looking for is "To Serve Them All
My Days," based on a novel by R.F. Delderfield." Its 13 episodes were
broadcast on Masterpiece Theater beginning October 10, 1982. It
concerns a shell-shocked man of modest means who gets a job as a
teacher in a school for upper class boys and "becomes an excellent
educator, inspiring the boys with his own qualities of insight and
idealism, qualities that help prepare him to send off his students to
fight yet another war in 1939."

Here is a summary of information about the series from the Public
Broadcasting Service's website:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/archive/63/63.html

Search Strategy:

Google search:
"masterpiece theater" production list
://www.google.com/search?q=%22Masterpiece+Theater%22++list+productions&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&start=20&sa=N

This led to the Masterpiece Theater area of the PBS website, where I
found a link to this page describing the on-line Masterpiece Theater
archives:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/archive/index.html

This page includes a link to the "The Archive Database," where I made
a search of all programs with the word "days" in the title:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/archive/index.html

If by some chance this is not what you are looking for, please post an
answer clarification request, and I am confident I can help you.
