Why am I unable to open some e-mail attachments? I can open Microsoft
Word ones, but others from out-of-town friends won't open. My Internet
provider hasn't been much help. I'm using Windows 98.

Hi there Pjm17! Could you please tell me what kind of attachments you
have that you can't open? You will notice that MS Word ends with
"doc". This is called the "file extension". You can help me identify
the other attachments by simply telling me the file extensions (the
last characters after the "."). Also, please tell me the email
software that you are using (i.e. MS Outlook, Eudora etc.).

Clarification of Question by pjm17-ga on 22 Nov 2002 06:49 PST
I'm using Microsoft Outlook. The documents I'm unable to open have no
file extensions such as "doc," as in Microsoft Word. When I click on
the paperclip to get the attachment, I find a small symbol in front of
the message that I can't make out. It isn't MS Word, either. I used to
be with Earthlink for Internet service, but changed provider a few
months ago to hargray.com (local phone company). Also, when I open
Microsoft Outlook (MS Outlook 5) it reads Microsoft Outlook by
Earthlink. I've even tried downloading MS Outlook so that the "by
Earthlink" would disappear, but I was unable to download it. So, I've
got two problems now -- e-mail attachments and MS Outlook that reads
"by
Earthlink."

Hi pjm17-ga,
First of all, although you say that you are using MS Outlook, I
believe that you are actually using Outlook Express. MS Outlook is
part of the MS Office suite, and is not available for download, while
Outlook Express is free and available for download with IE.

Lets start with the simple part of your question :

- Changing the Title Bar
  ======================
Most ISP's usually provide you with versions of Internet Explorer
and Outlook Express on their CD's. They usually brand these products,
changing the title bars, logos and home page URL's. You can change
these back by editing the registry, or downloading a free program that
will change them for you.
 - MANUAL REGISTRY EDITING
    -----------------------
The following article will provide you with step by step
instructions for removing branding from your outlook express and
internet explorer.
    - @incubus - An obsession in computing <home>
      ( http://www.incubus.co.uk/os/windows/ispcustom.htm )

 - SOFTWARE TO REMOVE BRANDING
   ---------------------------
IE Restore is a free, small (only 6 KB) program that removes
branding from both IE and Outlook Express. Download it from :
   - WeeRedSoftware : IE Restore 6.5

====
Well that takes care of the title bar text. Now for the attachments.
It would probably be easier to figure out if you could have provided
more details on the problem. For eg, what exactly happens when you
click on the attachment? You get an error message, a blank window
appears or nothing?
However, based on what you have provided, I am inclined to agree
with bobthedispatcher-ga's comment and believe that it is due to the
Microsoft Outlook Security update. This security update was provided
to prevent users from unintentionally downloading and executing email
viruses. If you have installed this update, you will find that some of
the attachments you receive are grayed out and nothing happens when
you click them.
For more information on this security update, please read the
following MS KnowledgeBase article :
   - Information About the Outlook E-mail Security Update
     ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;262631
)
However, according to you, you are using Outlook version 5, while the
security eupdate affects only MS Outlook 98/2000/XP. It is also built
into Outlook Express 6.
For instructions on dealing with attachments under Outlook Express
6, read the following MS Knowledge Base article :
   - Cannot Open E-Mail Attachments in Outlook Express After You
Install SP1
     ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q329570
)
Please try out the instructions in the above article, and see if they
help.

Also if you don't have Outlook Express 6, and bandwidth is not a
problem, then perhaps you could download and install the latest
version of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. You can get the
download at :
  - Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
    ( www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
)
The install size varies from 11 MB to 75 MB. You can also order the
software on CD from the above website.

If your problem has still not been solved, please provide the
following information :

- The exact version of you software
You can find out the version number by looking at Help > About
menu item.
- What is the extension of the attachment ?
Perhaps your friend who sent you the mail could tail you. Is it a
text file or picture?
- What exactly happens when you click on the attachment ?
Do you get an error message? an empty window? You say that you get
a symbol. What kind of a symbol? An exclamation mark?
- What antivirus/firewall software do you have installed?
- Are you using an Hotmail account? Is your friend sending from a
Hotmail or AOL account?

Provide the above info, and Iwe will work towards a solution.
Hope this helped.
if you need any clarifications, just ask!
:)

Please do not rate this answer unless your problem is completely
solved.
Thank You.

Problems just seem to come in bunches. Not only can I not open e-mail
attachments, I now have problem with branding. I eliminated "by
Earthlink" branding from Outlook Express, but it has returned. I tried
"run" to activate regedit.exe, but now that no longer works and I
can't fix it despite instructions on my computer. I had been using
Norton Antivirus 2000 and tried to install NAV 2003 -- again, no luck.
Norton people referred me to security.norton.com, but that hasn't
helped. It's possible a virus in my computer is preventing me from
installing NAV 2003, but I can't get the help I need to activate it
short of having Norton people do it for a fee. As to the e-mail
attachments, when I click on the paperclip, nothing opens and they
have no extensions. The symbol in front of the named attachment with
the paperclip is too small for me to decipher. Some of the friends use
AOL. I don't use a hotmail account, either. These problems might have
much to do with the fact that I can't install NAV 2003. I do know that
the problems are very frustrating.

Hi pjm17-ga,
Try out the steps suggested in the following Norton KnowledgeBase
article, and tell me if it solves the problem.
   - Email attachments are lost after being scanned by Norton
AntiVirus
     ( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/df0a595864594c86852567ac0063608c/5c1acc2c492f1d4888256806006423fb?OpenDocument
)

If the above didn't work, then I will need more details in order to
solve your problems. Please provide the following info :
 - What version of Internet Explorer(IE) and Outlook Express(OE) are
you using ? (5/5.5/6). When you click Help > About Microsoft outlook
Express , the about box contains the exact OE version, which is
something like '5.00.2615.200'. Please provide the exact text shown by
your OE.
 - You say that the branding returned after you had removed it. When
did this happen ? After you restarted Outlook Express or after you
restarted your computer ?
 - Did you restore/replace your Windows registry any time in between ?
Or did you reinstall IE/OE ?
 - You say that regedit "no longer works". What exactly occurs when
you goto Run and type 'regedit'? Your Windows directory should contain
a file named "Regedit.exe". Is this file present? What happens when
you run it ?
 - Are you running any firewall software ? If so, which one ?

VIRUS
=====
First of all, in order to make sure that your system is free from
viruses, use the following online services to scan your computer.
   - Symantec Security Check
In the page that you are redirected to, select 'Scan For Viruses'

   - Trend Micro : HouseCall

   - Panda Software : Online Scan
      ( http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
)
If the above services do not detect any viruses on your computer, then
we can rest assured that the problem is not caused by an active virus.

- Was your computer recently infected by a virus ? If so, which one ?
- Disable Norton's Email Protect, then try downloading and viewing the
email and attachment again.
To disable NAV 2000 email protection:
    1. Exit any running email programs.
    2. Open Norton AntiVirus.
    3. Click Options. If you are using SystemWorks, then click Norton
AntiVirus.
    4. Click Email Protection.
    5. Uncheck all boxes in the Protected email clients box.
    6. Uncheck "Enable email protection."
    7. Click OK.
- Try to completely remove Norton Antivirus 2000, then reinstall
Norton 2000 or 2003 and try viewing the attachment.

- Are any items present in Nortons Quarantine folder ? To get to this
:
   1. Start NAV, and then click Reports.
   2. Double-click "View and manage items in Quarantine."
   3. Click Quarantined Items, to see a list of Quarantined files.

Please post the names of the files that are in this list.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS
===============
  - Does the attachment appear grayed out in Outlook Express ?
  - Could you please find out the extension of the attachment from the
person who sent it to you ?
  - Could you post the file name of the attachment which doesn't open
?
  - Could you post a screenshot of your Outlook Express window,
showing the icon which appears beside the attachment? This will help
in identifying the problem. Post the screenshot on the web somewhere
and post a link to that page here.
  - Try to save the attachment to disk and opening it from there. use
the 'Save Attachment.." option in the File menu. Are you able to do
this ?
  - From the Tools menu, select Options...
In the Security tab, make sure that your Security Zone is set to
Internet Zone.

==================
Perhaps the simplest way to solve your problem would be to
reinstall/upgrade IE and OE, or to reinstall Windows 98. Are you
willing to consider these options ?
   - You can download and install the latest version of Outlook
Express and Internet Explorer from Microsofts Website :
       - Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
        ( www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
)
The install size varies from 11 MB to 75 MB. You can also
order the
software on CD from the above website.

  - If you decide to reinstall Windows 98, make sure that you have
your original Windows installation CD. Post here if you need more
instructions.

Thanks,
Theta-ga

Do the files appear "grayed out" in Outlook Express, when you click on
the attachment button?

They may be blocked for security reasons, depending on file type

Go into Tools >> Options >> Security
and uncheck the box that says "Do not allow opening or saving file
types that may be dangeous" (or something similar!)

Warning - any file accessed this way may contain dangerous code,
viruses, or worse, Never open aany files you are not sure of! Any
many viruses spread this way without the sender knowing. Good Virus
software is very important these days.

Thanks for all your help. I finally had to get Norton people to
straighten out virus problem and get NAV 2003 installed successfully.
I also reinstalled Windows 98, so that took care of other problems.
Thanks again, guys.
