What are the online demographics for Mexico and for the state of Chihuahua in particular? I would like to know household income, age, education of the average Mexican Internet user, and if possible, that of the Chihuahuan Internet user. Any other information, including surfing habits and usage patterns (ie - main use of Internet time is for research, shopping, etc.) would be helpful. I have already been to http://www.nua.com and to http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/ict/statistics/index.html -- need more in-depth information. thank you | |

Greetings Sstgep! A report of general Mexico usage patterns is available at http://www.etcnewmedia.com/review/default.asp?SectionID=11&CountryID=74 . Offered by New Media Review, the study seems quite comprehensive but I could find no Chihuahua statistics and so I am choosing to post this incomplete answer as a comment. My strategy may serve to assist another researcher. SEARCH PHRASES: usage patterns Mexico Internet demographics Mexico Internet demographics Chihuahua Mexico Internet Internet usage Chihuahua |

Hello SSTGEP: Most of the information you are looking for is available for free at http://www.inegi.gob.mx. The National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI) is the agency responsible for integrating Mexico's systems of statistical and geographic information, in addition to promoting and orienting the development of informatics in the country. I gathered the following information from that site: ------------------------------------------ Household Income ------------------------------------------ * Average daily salary on July 2001 in Chihuahua State: 135.70 pesos (13.57 dollars/day) (10 pesos = 1 dollar approx) http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/coyuntura/espanol/estados/chih/pdsbimss.html * Daily (8 hours) minimum wage for 2002 in Chihuahua State: Zone A (US border counties): 42.15 pesos / day Zone B (rest of counties): 38.30 pesos / day Mexico's National Average: 39.74 pesos / day http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/estadistica/espanol/sociodem/caraceco/car_12.html * 2000 Employed population distribution, by income groups: http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/estadistica/ingles/sociodem/caraceco/car_06.html * More indicators: http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/difusion/espanol/poblacion/definitivos/chih/sintesis/indsociodem.pdf ------------------------------------------ Age and Education ------------------------------------------ * 2000 Total population by gender and age in Chihuahua State: http://chih.inegi.gob.mx/sociodem/espanol/sexo/sex_01.html * 2000/2001 Education in Chihuahua State (current students and teachers): Pre-school through 9th grade: Students: 686,200 - Teachers 28,815 10th grade through Tech school: Students: 83,800 - Teachers 5,430 Job training: Students: 21,700 - Teachers 900 4-year college and beyond: Students: 60,300 - Teachers 5,245 http://chih.inegi.gob.mx/sociodem/espanol/educacion/edu_04.html * 2000 Indicators on population educational characteristics, by state: http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/estadistica/ingles/sociodem/educacion/edu_03.html * 2000 Population over age 15, by state, gender and literacy: http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/estadistica/ingles/sociodem/educacion/edu_04.html * 2000 Population under age 15, by state, gender and literacy: http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/estadistica/ingles/sociodem/educacion/edu_05.html ------------------------------------------ Surfing habits and usage patterns ------------------------------------------ * User profile for Reforma.com (one of the most visited newspapers in Mexico): http://comercial.reforma.com/Tarifas/web/audiencia.asp * Related info: http://www.ghusa.net/greenhill/internet/MBAD6121/mx.htm * Mediametrix (subscription required): http://www.comscore.com/ Best regards, cmarquez |

OOPS, I failed to mention the most important piece of information: ------------------------------------------ Computer Ownership (or availability) ------------------------------------------ * Chihuahua State: 10.63% of the State has computer access at home * National Average: 8.87% of the Country has computer access at home http://hades.inegi.gob.mx/sitio_inegi/informatica/espanol/estadisticas/disps2001/social2001/tg-vhcomp00.html I was raised and educated in Chihuahua, that is why I find this topic so interesting. In my recent trips to México, specifically to Chihuahua City, I've noticed an explosion of cybercafes, and the growing demand of hourly internet access, which usually costs between 10 to 30 pesos an hour. Over the past 16 months I used high-speed cybercafes in Cancún, Quintana Roo; Mérida, Yucatán; Monterrey, Nuevo León; Camargo, Chih.; Juárez, Chih.; and Chihuahua, Chih., and noticed that, although, most people at the cafes was in their teens to their mid-twenties, you could also find a share of people around their forties and more (parents, and grandparents) using these services. As for home Internet access, the user base is steadily growing in both the dial-up and cable arenas. Of course these final observations are just my perception of Internet growth south of the border. Best regards, cmarquez |
