Hello,

I found that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol can increase HDL
cholesterol levels. While a higher HDL (good cholesterol) can help
prevent heart attacks, the American Heart Association does not
recommend consuming alcohol if you do not already do so, just to
increase your HDL level.

"In some studies, moderate use of alcohol is linked with higher HDL
cholesterol levels. However, because of other risks, the benefit isn't
great enough to recommend drinking alcohol if you don't do so
already." (American Heart Association)

The article goes on to stress that drinking in moderation is the key
(one to two drinks per day for men, one drink per day for women).
People who drink in moderation tend to have less incidents of heart
disease, while increased consumption of alcohol beyond this will
quickly erode the health benefits of consuming alcohol.

After reading that alcohol raises HDL, I set out to find a good
definition of HDL and LDL (the two types of cholesterol).
"HDL stands for high density lipoprotein. HDL is considered "good"
cholesterol because it seems to protect you from heart attack. That
means that unlike other cholesterol levels the higher you’re HDL, the
better." (American Heart Association)

"LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein. This is the main carrier of
harmful cholesterol in your blood. A high level of LDL means there's a
higher risk of heart disease." (American Heart Association)

The moderate consumption of alcohol is associated with better health
and greater longevity than is either abstaining or abusing alcohol.
