Hello,

We are looking for the title and author of a book that one of us heard
read on the children's programme Jackanory sometime around 1983. (For
those that don't know, this was a series in which a narrator read a
book aloud, usually over several episodes, with accompanying
illustrations). It featured spirited Victorian orphans who worked in a
cotton mill. The weather was bad, so we think it was set in the north
of England. There was a scene in which a huge cotton press that
descended from the ceiling to squash the cotton, and one child saved
another from being squashed. Also, we think that a woman narrated it.

Thanks!

Guy and Laura

Greetings--

I've searched extensively and learned lots about Jackanory (It sounds
delightful.) but have unable to identify your book.
I have emailed several sources who may be able to assist, and I shall
keep you informed of those results.

Meanwhile, I have compiled some Jacanory links that may interest you,
as well as derived a list of books that could possibly be yours but I
have been unable to confirm or eliminate. At any rate, they may bring
back some good memories.

Jackanory's many presenters read hundreds of stories, re-creating an
image of story time at home. Later the programme evolved and presented
plays for young children, under the name Jackanory Playhouse.

I've included here those that *might* be yours or contain your story.
By that I mean I have not been able to eliminate the possibility.
