I have a problem with one of my Excel workbooks. When I open this
workbook, it opens three copies of the workbook, all with the same
name, but with the file extensions xls1, xls2 and xls3. I can hide
the extra workbooks, but I haven't been able to delete them. Anything
I do on one is replicated in the other two workbooks and when I close
one, they all close. They seem to be one workbook, but appear as
three on the screen. Any ideas what I've done, or what I need to do
to get rid of the extra workbooks. |

Hi izzy2000,
Have you tried finding the workbook files in C:/My Documents/ or
wherever you have them? If not, see if the duplicates are listed and
try deleting them from there.

Izzy2000,
Macros can cause this sort of behavior. Do you have macros/VBA in your
workbook? If this is not your workbook, it is posssible that this is a
macro virus.

If this is caused by a virus (particularly macro virus), the proper
way to remove it is to run a good antivirus program (Norton or McAfee)
in your computer, let it scan all the files and remove the virus from
the files. If some files cannot be cleaned, you have no choice but to
delete these since you cannot remove the virus anymore. After scanning
and removing the virus, delete the "normal.dot" file just to be sure.
If the workbook in question is in a diskette or removable drive, scan
it and do the previous step above just to be sure.
I hope this works for you. And if it does, please verify so I can tell
you more and post this as an answer just to be sure. :D

The file extensions actually read xls:1, xls:2 and xls:3 if this is
significant. However, when I list my workbook files, only one
workbook is listed with the extension xls. When I open the workbook,
three copies open and I can't close the extra copies independently.
If I close one, they all close. Therefore, I can't delete one without
deleting all of them. It's been suggested that this is a macro
problem, but I'm not aware of any macros in this workbook. I'm also
going to try running an anti-virus program in case that's the problem

Izzy2000,
Using the correct extensions provided in your last clarifications, I
can confirm that tony55's comment is the correct answer to your
problem. The important part is to Save the workbook after closing the
extra windows.
A Google Groups search using:
"xls:1"
will show several threads addressing this issue.
Since your question was correctly answered by a commenter, I won't
post this as a paid answer.
Good luck with your spreadsheet!
