As soon as my computer boots up and i go straight to internet explorer if i click on the drop down arrow for the address bar the computer runs up the cd-rom. Why is this? It also does it when i open up my documents or another folder type and only does it once the very first time I do either of the actions, everytime after that the computer doesnt run up the cd-rom. Here's my computer specs: 1.53mhz AMD processor, 40 gig HD, 640 MB ram. | |

I find that whenever I have a disk in my CDRom drive my computer runs up the disk at seemingly random times (Windows 2000, and especially Windows 95/98). If I try to think what I am doing at when the drive runs up, it seems I am always doing something file system related. As far as I can tell, the Windows OS is just double-checking the directory tree and contents of the drive so it can present the user with options related to the drive. I, therefore, do not keep cds in my drive when they are not being used. I dont know of any way to turn off this feature. Internet explorer also keeps a history of webpages/files you have visited. If you have visited a file on a CDRom drive, it will identify the drive letter with your CDRom drive, and Windows may run up the CDRom to see what is available when Internet Explorer is used. Help files and info files on install CDs are often stored in files that require the browser to read. Try deleting your history and temporary files in Internet Explorer (Tools menu Internet Options you need to click two buttons Clear History and Delete Files. After deleting these files, does IE still run up your CDRom? (dont delete these files if you use your history or use the auto complete features of Internet Explorer for surfing the web.) |

It does not matter if i have a cd in the drive or not, it still runs up, and sometimes keeps running until i hit eject to shut it off. Tried deleting temp files and clearing the history with same results. |

I'm not sure if this is the solution, therefore I'm not going to post this as an answer. But it just may be the thing you're looking for. Your problem may be caused by the Auto Insert Notification feature which is available in your system. The feature causes your system to 'poll', or check the status of your drive from time to time. The solution would be to disable the Auto Insert Notification feature. Here's how to do it: 1) Go Control Panel and open up System 2) Select the Device Manager tab and double click CD-ROM 3) Double click the CD-ROM drive in your system 4) Select the Settings tab and uncheck the Auto Insert Notification feature. Hopefully this will help. pmrozik-ga |

For your problem I can give you the solution. You have to Control the CD-ROM Autorun Function then it should not run unnecessary. Follow my instructions you will have to modify the registry. 1. Click on start-->Run-->regedit-->press enter 2. This should open registry editor now you can see 5 trees HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS, HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG. 3. Now browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom and check if "Autorun" is there. if it is there check the value if the value is 1 change value to 0. if "Autorun" is not present then create a new DWORD value named Autorun and set the data to equal '0'. Remember the settings I repeate again Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom Name: Autorun Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value: (0=disable, 1=enable) This should solve the problem Good Luck !!!! |

If your CD-ROM spins up when it is empty, it looks like a hardware problem. Do you have any opportunity to temporarily install and try another CD-ROM drive in your PC? |

sorry for not replying sooner; to amansingh, there is no cdrom folder in my registry, so that doesnt work for me, unless i need to add this to the registry? For a hardware issue...i only used to have one cd rom and it would have the problem that i'm trying to fix, i recently added a cd/rw now that drive spins up and the regular cdrom drive doesnt anymore??????? I deselected the auto insert notification but it still does what it is doing. |
