Hi Erwin,
There are a few reasons that can cause delays in the right-click
window coming up in a timely fashion. I'll go through the most common
ones and explain what the remedies are. In no particular order....
1. Lack of available system memory.
If you have a lot of applications running in your system tray [the
small area in the lower right hand corner of your screen] it can put
your system in a state of constant busyness, accessing the memory and
the swap space on your hard drive. troubleshooting step #1 is to see
if you still have this problem with fewer programs in the system tray.
This is unlikely to be the issue, but a good place to start for
overall computer health. If you still have the problem check....
2. programs installed that slow-down the ability to access everythign
on the right-click context menu.
Two programs that have specifically been implicated in right-click
delays are
-- mcafee anti-virus version 4.5 and below
[solution - upgrade to 4.5.1 or above]
http://www.mcafee.com/
-- stuffit - because it is available as an option on the right-click
menu and it does not work well in Win2K in this capacity, Alladin
claims this has to dowith the shortcut the right-clic kmenu uses to
access the A drive, and they have a fix.
[solution - available on the stuffit website
http://www.aladdinsys.com/support/techsupport/win/dswin/dswin3.html
which involves downloading a patch available here
http://www.aladdinsys.com/downloads/files/DSDZUP.EXE ]
if this is not the case, we have one more option
3. registry changes
In some very rare instances, your registry could be corrupted, since
there is a setting for this delay, I will mention it. However, I must
also add, do not mess with your registry unless you know what you are
doing! You could render your computer inoperable and then you would be
unable to ask us more questions :)
Explaining how to modify the registry is a bit outside the scope of
this question, but the advice given in the user forum that addresses
this problem is the following: "Go to HKey Current User/Control
Panel/Desktop. There will be a Key called MenuShowDelay it will have a
decimal value. The lower the value, the quicker the menu pops up. Try
a setting of 10 or lower."
4. not running Win2K System File Checker in service pack 2
Recent versions of Win2k [service pack 2 and beyond] include a utility
called SFC which is a system file checker which will make sure the
system files are where they are supposed to be. Running this by typing
sfc at the command line promt will make sure the operating system has
all of the system files it needs to operate correctly, including the
right click context menus.

5. specific items on context menus
This last one is more of a common sense issue, but make sure that your
context menu for IE does not have access to any network drives [such
as a network hard drive, a non-connected drive, a web page] that the
operating system may be checking for and not finding, thus resulting
in a delay until the ssytem 'times out' looking for the resource.
I originally tracked down some answers to this question by searching
Google on delay and "right click"

which led to the computing forum here:

wherem ost of the answers came from, or were started from.
I hope this solves your problem, please let us know how it works.
