If you surf the net a lot and download and install programs
frequently, a number of programs may get installed on your computer
that interfere with IE's proper working. Try out the following steps :

STEP 1 : Find and remove all spywares
Spywares are programs that get installed on your computer
without your knowledge and then spy on your internet activities. To
get rid of them, download and install AdAware, a free utility to
detect and remove such programs.
        - Lavasoft : Download AdAware
         ( http://www.zeropaid.com/adaware/)
After you download and install AdAware, scan your registry and
hard disks using it. Once the scan is complete, it will show you a
list of spyware that it found and five you an option to delete it or
ignore it. Always Backup the items first, and then delete them.
After you are done, reboot your computer and try IE again. If
the problem still persists, try step 2.

STEP 2 : Disable IE Extensions
Certain IE plugins or third party extensions can cause IE to
work improperly. To disable IE third party objects :
       - Close all Internet Explorer windows, click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control Panel.
       - Double-click Internet Options.
       - Click the Advanced tab.
       - Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser
extensions (requires restart) check box.
       - Restart your computer.
Try running IE now to see if the problem has been solved. If
not, go to step 3.

STEP 3 : Remove Unneeded startup programs
Perhaps the problem lies with programs that are started with
your computer and interfere with Internet Explorer. To disable
unneeded programs :
        - Click Start > Run
        - In the box that appears, type msconfig
        - The MSConfig utility window will appear
        - Click on the 'Startup' tab
A list of programs that startup with your computer will be
displayed. If you see any programs that should not be starting up with
your computer, remove the check mark next to it. If you are unable to
decide, please post the names of the programs here, and we will do our
best to help.
After you have gone down the list removing unnecessary programs,
click OK. You will be asked if you want to reboot. Click YES.
After the reboot, try out IE. If the problem persists, time for step
4.

STEP 4 : ReInstall Internet Explorer 6.
Some time the simplest solution to all your problems is a
reinstall. You can download and install the latest version of Internet
Explorer from :
   - Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
    ( www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
)
If you have problems in downloading IE, and reside in US or
Canada, then you can order a CD containing the software at (
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ordercd/ie6sp1.asp ).

Please try out the above suggestions, and inform me of the result.
If you need any clarifications, just ask!
