srwilson,

Thanks for your interesting question. You can learn a great bit about
the spending habits and the value of money by looking at the average
sizes of homes built during different times. According to the US
Census, new built homes in the United States increase in square
footage between 400 and 500 sq ft every 20 years.

In 1950, the average square footage of a single family home was 1,000
square feet

In 1960, the average square footage of a single family home was 1,200
square feet

In 1970, the average square footage of a single family home was 1,500
square feet

In 1980, the average square footage of a single family home was 1,595
square feet

In 1990, the average square footage of a single family home was 1,905
square feet

In 2000, the average square footage of a single family home was 2,265
square feet

In 2001, the average square footage of a single family home was 2,330
square feet

Thank you for your question and if you need any further clarification,
please let me know!
