Hello again Anonymous777 and thanks for your clarification. I would
like to approach this subject step-by-step based on your questions in
order for you to better understand Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Since
you want to know everything about DHT, I will give you some
significant sites that will help you answer your questions as you read
on. Let us start with the definition of this hormone.

A basic dictionary definition of DHT says that it is “the compound
into which testosterone is converted in tissue where it exerts its
hormonal effect.”

You can find so many on-line references for DHT. The following links

With regards to your last question, I can’t find a site that explains

effects of lack of DHT in the body. These are studies made by the

Hello again Anonymous777. I'm so sorry to keep you waiting. I wasn't
feeling so well during the past days. It was hard to analyze data with
a cloudy mind. I needed rest so that I can concentrate on your query
and give you as much data as I can. I'm in the process of analyzing
and finalizing the info I've collected regarding your most important
question and will post it later on. I hope you understand.

Sincerely,

Feilong

Since we are talking about hormones and these vary greatly according
to gender, could you please tell me if you are a male or a female?

Clarification of Answer by feilong-ga on 26 Nov 2002 14:16 PST
Regarding my clarification of your gender, I was advised by the
specialist I consulted to simply present a generalized view since
hormones are a sensitive topic to touch. There are so many hormones in
the body and so many factors that can affect the actions of these
hormones that giving a specific view regarding this would simply end
up being inaccurate. You have to personally consult your doctor to
give you a more “specific” view on the consequences that will happen
to your body with regards to your last query. Now that I’ve relayed to
you what the doctor implied, let us now proceed to the generalized
answer to your query.

The key to your query is to understand that testosterone and
dihydrotestosterone are interrelated since the latter is simply a
converted form of testosterone. Testosterone is an androgen or male
hormone that has anabolic properties. It is present in the body,
mostly male, in a number of forms. All androgens are steroid
compounds. To have a better understanding of what testosterone and
dihydrotestosterone are all about read the following pages carefully:

ExRx (Exercise Prescription) on the net webpage
Endogenous Testosterone
http://www.exrx.net/AnabolicSteroids/Testosterone.html

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a metabolite or changed form of
testosterone that is believed to be the hormonally active form of
testosterone in males.

Dihydrotestosterone, the most potent testosterone
http://www.dihydrotestosterone.com/

Too much DHT in men can cause male pattern baldness and with prostrate
enlargement. It is responsible for the development of the genitalia in
the developing fetus and during puberty.

As the doctor noted before, it would be hard to give you a specific
view without looking at the other factors at work, as implied in this
pages:

“What will happen if you lower your DHT by 90%. If there is no DHT in
your body at 21 what will your body do or look like? More hair, great
skin, better body?”

Depending on your body, too much or too little of the androgenic
hormones can result in the following:

Minimizing the conversion of testosterone into DHT can have a double
effect:
shrinkage of the prostate gland and a difficulty to achieve proper
erections (http://www.dihydrotestosterone.com/index.htm).

Too much DHT, on the other hand, can lead to the prostate enlargement:

Preventive Medicine
http://www.myhealthspan.com/Testosterone.shtm

The most important thing that you should remember is that
“dihydrotestosterone is more potent as an androgen than testosterone
and blood levels must be kept within the normals for age. If DHT
levels are high, testosterone therapy should be reduced or suspended.”

Why monitor 5-dihydrotestosterone(DHT)?

There are several home test kits available that can help you know your
DHT levels

Still more can be found by typing “dihydrotestosterone test kit” in
the Google search box.

So how do you inhibit the production of DHT? There are basically two
medical substances you can take:

Finasteride

Merck & Co., Inc.
Proscar

Still more can be found by typing “finasteride” in the Google search
box.

Saw Palmetto

Still more can be found by typing “saw palmetto” in the Google search
box.

For a view on the comparison of effects between finasteride and saw
palmetto, you can visit and read the “Shredded Texan Nutrition”

“How does low DHT effect working out?”

This question can be answered indirectly simply by thinking about the
reverse effects of having normal DHT levels. A good description can be
found in a “Steroid Alternatives.com” webpage.

“DHT is a very potent androgenic steroid. The strong effect DHT has on
the central nervous system also helps to greatly support the buildup
of strength, and its high affinity for serum binding proteins allows
it to competitively force more testosterone into a free state when
taken with such a steroid or prohormone. DHT is also an efficient
anti-aromatase (inhibitor of the estrogen synthesizing enzyme), and
makes an excellent addition to any testosterone-based cycle.”
http://www.steroidalternatives.com/impact.htm

This would certainly mean that low DHT will result in a leaner,
weaker, basically almost feminine body with thinner muscles. It would
also result in other physical consequences because of the actions of
other hormones.

One reference I found that can be helpful to you is from Testosterone

The advice made by the specialist I consulted is correct as far as
presenting a general answer to your query is concerned. There are
really so many factors that can affect the effects of having low or
high DHT levels in the body. You will really need to consult a doctor
regarding this, as implied by the “Important Disclaimer” at the bottom
of this page. I hope my answer helped you better understand the topic
you inquired. Thanks for asking.
