Miss Liberty is actually Teresa Cafarelli de Francisci who posed for
her husband when he fashioned the portrait of the “Peace dollar.”
“For more than 70 years, Teresa Cafarelli de Francisci enjoyed an
unusual distinction: She could reach in her purse and pull out a coin
that bore her likeness. In 1921, as a young bride, she had posed for
her sculptor husband, Anthony de Francisci, when he fashioned the
portrait of a graceful female figure for that coin – one that came to
be known as the Peace dollar.”

This excellent article goes on to say that this design was chosen out
of a limited competition, with her husband being one of the nine
artists invited by the United States treasury to participate. If you
want more information about the competition, I highly recommend
reading through the entire article.

Further research led me to another good website, and here are two
excerpts:

“Between the years 1793 and 1933 millions of beautiful Gold, Silver,
and Copper coins were struck with images of Ms. Liberty (Freedom) on
them for circulation (…)” (ecoinprices.com)

“By 1982, the government recalled all the tangible copper from our
pennies. Even our pennies become copper-plated nickel. Presidents
appear on all U.S. coinage, totally replacing the image of Ms. Liberty
(freedom).” (ecoinprices.com)

Above two quotes from the web page: “United States Gold Coins”
http://www.ecoinprices.com/gold-coins.htm

The Peace Dollar was issued to “commemorate the termination of
hostilities between the United States and Germany after World War I.
The Peace Dollar was minted from 1921 through 1935, and then no more
dollar coins were made until 1971 (…).” Excerpt from:
“20th Century U.S. Coins”

I found an good biography of Teresa Cafarelli De Fransisci and her
husband in the Google cache of the web page
(www.pngdealers.com/coin/coin-1000.htm)
The article on the actual website has been deleted but the text of the
article can be found here:

This article will only be available until Google refreshes its cache
of the website.

Hopefully this is the type of research you were looking for. If you
need any clarifications or further research, please let me know and I
will do my best to further assist you.
