I need to know the history of US and UN sanctions on Libya, including
any current military sanctions and the duration of any economic
sanctions. Any impacts of these sanctions.

I'd also like to know a summary of US diplomacy with Libya under the
Qaddafi regime.

Thanks so much!

Hello,

I found a good webpage (United Nations website) that has the history
of United Nations Sanctions on Libya:

http://www.un.org/News/ossg/libya.htm

There are also links to PDF documents of the text of some of the
sanctions.

The reason for these sanctions seems to stem from an incident in 1992
when "an air and arms embargo was imposed on Libya to press Tripoli to
hand over the two suspects wanted for the 1988 bombing of a US
airliner." The article goes on to say that when the suspects were
handed over in 1999, sanctions were suspended. from

"Libya"
http://globalpolicy.igc.org/security/sanction/libya/indxirlb.htm

At the above URL you will also find a history of US sanctions against
Libya well, which appears to follow UN sanctions fairly closely until
the UN lifted them. While the European Union lifted sanctions on
September 13, 1999, the United States still has sanctions against
Libya.

I found a detailed article dated February 2001 that talks about US
Sanctions Against Libya (also covers UN sanctions). It includes a
discussion on economic and social impact on the United States and
Libya as a result of US Sanctions on Libya.

Another article that you will probably find useful is this extensive
Country Analysis on Libya by the Energy Information Administration:

You can find a detailed article on the US and Libya during the Qaddafi
Era here:

Hello tisme, This is just a note to let you know I won't get to this
for another couple days. Thanks so much for your answer. In a couple
days I'll have a chance to read your answer thoroughly and look at all
the sites you point me to. At that point, I might need some
clarifications, especially regarding overall US diplomacy with Libya.
