Question ID: 111835
I have a problem with an IBM T22 laptop.
It's running Windows NT 4.0, SP 6.
It has a single external COM port, and an inbuilt Lucent WinModem.
By default, the external COM port ties to COM 1- but so does the
WinModem.
This means I can't use the external COM port, as the soft modem ties
it up-
eg, if I install something like Palm sync software, it won't run as it
can't find a free available COM port.

I want to find a way to either move the modem to another port, or move
the external com port to prevent this clash.
Things I've already tried:
-removing the WinModem from Control Panel, adding COM2 (on IRQ 15),
reinstalling the WinModem- but COM2 wasn't available as a selectable
port for the modem to use, only COM 1.

-adding a COM3- but this caused other problems- COM1 became
unavailable.

IBM tech support have been zero use in this issue.

Help!

Hello 0r8it,

Do you have an infra-red interface on your thinkpad?

Hello again 0r8it,

Am I correct in my understanding of the information
so far available, that the information at:

TP General - Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
support on IBM ThinkPad systems:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3G9KK5.html

(admittedly, dated 1997) does not cover your model?

Would you happen to have any additional identifying
information to the description 'IBM T22', which may
assist researchers in locating a solution?

Continuing to search for you,

best regards,

gan.

Possibly this page may help in gathering
extra identifying information?

Finding my machine type/model and serial
number or my part number for my IBM accessory:

best regards

gan.

gan- thank you for your help.
Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until
Monday to get you the exact model number- the machine is
at work.
cheers-

did any of these suggestions help at all, or should we keep trying?

Hello gan-
the machine is an IBM T22 laptop, type 2647.
The url's you gave unfortunately seem a little bit out of date.
Here's what I've tried so far-
-uninstalled winmodem in Control Panel.
In BIOS, changed com settings to those corresponding to com2.
Reinstalled winmodem onto com2.

This worked ok- I could dial up, etc, but when I tried to add a com1
in order to add external devices, it would not work.

It seems to me that this model has only one physical com port on the mobo,
and that although it's settings can be altered, you still end up with only
one port available. If that is used by the modem, tough luck.
Any help gratefully received!

Thanks for the type number. I'm looking into this for you;
hopefully myself or another researcher will have more
information soon.

Best regards,

gan.

typically, the settings you would need to change are located in the
bios, and can specify which logical port (com 1 vs com 2 etc) a
physical port should be associated with

Thanks Funkywizard- unfortunately, the only options available in the
bios are to alter address ranges the port uses or to
enable/disable/*set os control over the com port parameters. Nothing
there to actually change it's logical "mapping".

*In fact, the os control option, though listed at the side of the bios
screen as an option, isn't actually selectable.

hmm. actually, those address ranges, if they are of the following
types, are synonymous with a com port # designation.

Com 1: 3F8h
Com 2: 2F8h
Com 3: 3E8h
Com 4: 2E8h

gan- thanks for your comment.
yes, the t22 has an ir port. However, it has no drivers available.
I've asked IBM about this- they claim that IR is not supported for NT
4.0 on the T22.
(Curiously, previous series of IBM machines supported IR within NT-
but there you go.)

funkywizard- I didn't know that, I'll check it out. Thanks for your
comment.
