Hi... it's not so much the long distance I'm interested in, as it is
the other stuff. I just got a new apt and am going to be paying them
$50 per month + long distance. But I'm not going to be using the phone
that much. Is there a cheaper monthly fee... and how does it compare
to my $50/mo thing?

suitable for you, both found at:

From my understanding, you are currently paying the $50+/mo with Bell
Atlantic, but it seems you would be better off switching to one of
these plans instead.

AT&T also offers local service in Manhattan, for a flat fee per month.
 If you make a lot of local calls it's not a bad idea-- otherwise,
you'll probably save money with Verizon.  Check out the att.com site.
